Are you ready to kick-start your blogging journey? Well, before you dive headfirst into the blogosphere, let’s talk about something important: the common blogging mistakes you need to avoid.

In this post, I’ll share the 15 most common blogging mistakes and show you how to sidestep them so you don’t have to waste your time going back to fix them later.

Sound good? Okay, let’s do this!

Blogging Mistake #1: Choosing a Vague Niche

Imagine if you were to wander aimlessly in the vast wilderness of a vague or broad niche. It’s like setting off on an adventure without a map or compass. The consequences can be…well, less than stellar. Your audience might get confused, unsure of what to expect from your blog.

They’ll be scratching their heads, wondering if your content is meant for them or for someone else.

And while having a nicheless blog can work, for a beginner blogger, it’s much easier to narrow your focus in the beginning. You can always expand a little after your blog has grown.

How to Pick a Niche

Passion Meets Profitability

Start by identifying your true passions and interests. What topics make your heart skip a beat? Remember, blogging is a long-term commitment, so it’s essential to choose a niche that genuinely excites you.

But don’t stop there! Look at the profitability potential of your niche. Are there monetization opportunities? Research the market, identify trends, and find that magical intersection where passion and profitability collide.

For example, let’s say you’re passionate about sustainable fashion. You can carve out a niche by focusing on ethical and eco-friendly clothing brands, providing styling tips with an eco-conscious twist, and sharing your journey to a sustainable wardrobe.

Target Audience Appeal

Think about your ideal reader or target audience. What are their pain points, and interests? By understanding your audience, you can tailor your content to meet their specific needs. Remember, a niche should not only resonate with you but also help your readers.

Always keep the phrase, “What’s in it for me?” when thinking about your readers’ perspectives. Give them a reason to want to read your blog.

For example, if your target audience consists of modern moms seeking work-life balance, you can create a niche blog that offers practical tips for managing a career, family, and self-care, while emphasizing the importance of self-compassion and embracing imperfections.

Competition Analysis

Research other bloggers in your potential niche. An easy way to do this is to go to Google and type in a keyword you plan on making content around and see what blogs come up. Analyze their content, engagement, and audience size. Look for gaps or untapped areas within the niche that you can fill with your unique perspective and expertise.

Remember, competition can be a good thing—it indicates a demand for content—but finding your unique angle is key to standing out.

For example, let’s say you want to start a travel blog. While there are many established travel bloggers, you could focus on a specific type of travel, like solo female travel in off-the-beaten-path destinations, or provide detailed itineraries for adventure-loving travelers with a focus on budget-friendly options.

Test The Waters

You don’t have to fully commit to a specific niche right away. Dip your toes in different niches by creating a few sample blog posts or conducting mini-experiments. Gauge the response from your audience and see which topics generate more engagement and interest. This experimentation phase can help you refine your niche and find your sweet spot.

For example, if you’re torn between two niches—healthy eating and sustainable living—you can create a few blog posts in each category and see which resonates more with your audience (as long as your blog name could work for either niche).

Analyze metrics like comments, social shares, and overall engagement to help you make your decision. If your niches share an overarching theme you can use to link them, you could even combine them into a broader niche.

So in the above example, you could combine healthy eating with sustainable living into an environmentally-friendly wellness blog.

I’ve made a post dedicated to picking a niche for your blog that you can check out if you need some more help.

Blogging Mistake #2: Ignoring Target Audience Research

To create a successful blog that resonates with your readers, you need to put on your detective hat and dive deep into the psyche of your audience. Understanding their needs and preferences is like unlocking the secret door to their hearts and minds. When you speak directly to their desires, they’ll feel seen, heard, and magnetically drawn to your blog.

Failing to do target audience research can lead to a disconnect—a mismatch between what you offer and what your readers seek. Your content might miss the mark, leaving your audience uninspired and unengaged. And in a world bursting at the seams with content, your blog will fade into the vast abyss of forgettable websites.

blogging mistakes to avoid for newbies

But don’t worry! You can avoid the mistake of neglecting target audience research and build a loyal tribe of engaged readers who see you as their go-to source of inspiration, knowledge, and entertainment.

How To Research Your Target Audience

Surveys and Questionnaires

Create online surveys or questionnaires to gather insights directly from your audience. The easiest way to do this is to send a survey email to your email list. Ask them about their interests, pain points, and what they hope to gain from your blog.

Keep the questions short and engaging, and incentivize participation by offering a giveaway or exclusive content as a thank-you gesture.

For example, you can use tools like Google Forms or Typeform to create your surveys. Ask questions like, “What topics are you most interested in learning about?” or “What challenges do you face in [niche topic]?”

Social Media Listening

Yeah, it’s kind of like being an internet spy. You can join relevant Facebook groups, follow hashtags on Instagram and Twitter, and monitor discussions about things in your industry by setting up Google Alerts for keywords related to your niche.

Pay attention to the questions, comments, and pain points your audience shares. This real-time feedback is a goldmine of insights that can help you make killer content.

For example, if you’re a beauty blogger, you can join beauty-related Facebook groups and watch the questions people ask, the products they rave about, and the challenges they face. Use this information to craft blog posts that address their specific needs.

Analyzing Website Analytics

Look at the data from your website analytics to gain insights into your audience’s behavior and preferences. Look at metrics like page views, bounce rates, and time spent on different pages.

See which blog posts or topics resonate most with your audience, and create more content in those areas.

For example, if you notice that your blog posts on sustainable fashion receive significantly higher engagement and longer reading times, it indicates a strong interest in that topic. Create more content around sustainable fashion or explore related subtopics to cater to your audience’s preferences.

Have Conversations

Interact with your audience through comments, emails, or direct messages on social media. Encourage them to share their thoughts, questions, and feedback. Actively listen and respond to their comments.

For example, when a reader leaves a comment on your blog post, reply with a thoughtful response and ask follow-up questions to encourage further engagement. Don’t just say something like, “Thanks for sharing!” Take it a step further and ask questions to keep the conversation going.

Take note of recurring themes or questions that come up in these conversations and use them as inspiration for future blog posts.

Remember, audience research is an ongoing process. Continuously listen, adapt, and refine your understanding of your readers’ interests. This will help you to create content that truly resonates with them and establishes your blog as a trusted resource in your niche.

Blogging Mistake #3: Inconsistent Posting Schedule

Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to maintaining an engaged and loyal audience. Regular blog updates act as a lifeline, keeping your readers connected and hungry for more. When you have an inconsistent posting schedule, it’s like giving your readers a rollercoaster ride of anticipation and disappointment. They never know when to expect new content, and that uncertainty can lead to disengagement and ultimately, a dwindling readership.

It also hurts your SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Regularly updating your blog with new content (aka new blog posts) sends the signal to Google that your blog is current and a trustworthy source of information. If you post 2 blog posts one week and then nothing for 3 weeks, the Google bots are never going to come around to check out your stuff.

It’s better to post one blog post every 2 weeks than it is to post 2 posts in one week and then nothing but crickets for the following 3 weeks.

How to Stay Consistent

Plan and Prioritize

Treat your blog as a priority and make time for it in your schedule. Set aside dedicated blocks of time for content creation, editing, and scheduling. Planning ahead lets you write posts in advance so you always have a couple of posts ready to publish in a steady flow. Make a content calendar outlining your upcoming topics (you can use my blog planner to help you stay organized with this!) and use the scheduling function of WordPress or your blogging platform of choice to automatically publish your posts for you.

Use a Frequency that Works for You

Decide on a posting frequency that aligns with your capacity and resources. It’s better to consistently publish one high-quality post per week than to struggle with daily updates that sacrifice quality. Find a balance that works for you.

Batch Content Creation

This is honestly such a game-changer. Instead of creating content on a day-to-day basis, try batching your content creation. Set aside a dedicated block of time to write multiple posts at once. This approach helps streamline your workflow, improves efficiency, and ensures you have a backlog of content to draw from during busy times.

I like to batch-create outlines for blog posts. I’ll do all the keyword research and brainstorming for multiple posts at once. Then I’ll write their outlines all at once. Then I have another couple of days set aside for writing the first drafts of 2-3 blog posts. So by the time I start focusing on a single blog post, all I have to do is edit it and add the finishing touches and graphics. It’s so much easier than trying to write a blog post from scratch every time!

Repurpose and Refresh

If you have evergreen articles that are still relevant, update and republish them to breathe new life into your blog. This approach allows you to maintain consistency while keeping your content fresh and engaging.

Set Realistic Goals

Be honest with yourself about what you can realistically achieve. It’s better to under-promise and over-deliver than to set unrealistic goals and struggle to meet them. Consistency is key, and setting achievable targets ensures you can consistently provide value to your readers.

Outsource and Collaborate

If time or resources are limited, you can outsource certain tasks like first draft writing to freelancers or you can collaborate with guest bloggers. This can help lighten your workload and create a consistent flow of fresh content.

Guest bloggers can bring a fresh perspective and introduce your readers to new voices within your niche (plus they do all the work writing the post!). You can add a page to your blog advertising that you’re accepting guest posts. Make an outline for the kind of content you’re looking for and write out the steps for how a potential guest blogger can contact you or submit their article. Be sure to add that you’ll let the guest blogger post a link back to their blog in the article – that’s what they’re looking for.

Blogging Mistake #4: Poor Content Quality

Valuable and well-crafted content is the lifeblood of any successful blog. It is the foundation upon which you build your online presence, establish your authority, and foster a loyal readership. Here’s why it matters:

Reader Satisfaction: Your readers visit your blog seeking answers, inspiration, or entertainment. By delivering valuable content, you meet their needs and provide them with a satisfying experience. When readers find value in your posts, they are more likely to engage, share, and return for future content.

Building Trust and Credibility: High-quality content showcases your expertise, knowledge, and attention to detail. It positions you as a credible source within your niche, earning the trust of your readers. When your audience trusts you, they become more receptive to your recommendations, more likely to engage with your blog, and more willing to share your content with others.

Establishing Your Unique Voice: Well-crafted content lets you express your unique voice and perspective. It helps you stand out from the sea of similar blogs, carving a distinctive space for yourself in the minds of your readers. Your writing style, tone, and personality shine through, making your blog memorable and compelling.

Boosting SEO and Organic Traffic: Google loves high-quality content. When you consistently deliver valuable and well-crafted content, you improve your chances of ranking higher in search engine results. By optimizing your posts with relevant keywords, providing authoritative information, and creating a seamless user experience, you attract organic traffic and increase your blog’s visibility.

Engaging and Retaining Your Audience: Engaging content keeps your audience hooked and hungry for more. It sparks conversations, encourages comments, and prompts social sharing. When readers find value in your content, they become more invested in your blog’s community. They eagerly await your next post, actively participate in discussions, and develop a sense of belonging.

How to Write High-Quality Content

Craft Compelling Headlines

A captivating headline grabs attention and entices readers to click and read your content. Use power words, create curiosity, and promise value in your headlines.

And remember, for SEO’s sake, make sure the title (headline) of your blog post is in H1 tags. It should be the only thing in your blog post that has an H1 header tag. Use H2, H3, etc. for the rest of the headers in your post.

blogging mistakes to avoid for new bloggers

Hook Your Readers with Engaging Introductions

Your introduction sets the tone for the rest of your content. Hook your readers from the get-go with a captivating opening line, a thought-provoking question, or a compelling story. Make them curious, excited, or emotionally invested in what you have to say.

And make sure to put your target keyphrase within the first 200 words of your blog post!

Write in a Conversational Tone

Aim for a friendly, conversational tone that makes your readers feel like they’re having a chat with a friend. Don’t use overly formal language or jargon that can alienate your audience. Use simple, concise sentences and explain complex concepts in a way that anyone can understand.

Use Subheadings and Formatting

Break up your content with skimmable subheadings (remember subheadings don’t get the H1 tag – only the blog title. Use H2, H3, etc. instead) that guide readers through your article.

Subheadings make your content scannable, letting readers find what they’re looking for quickly. Use formatting like bullet points, numbered lists, and bold or italicized text to emphasize important information and improve readability.

Inject Personality and Storytelling

No matter how helpful a blog post is, no one is going to read it if it’s super boring.

via GIPHY

Make your content relatable and memorable by infusing it with your personality and storytelling. Share personal anecdotes, experiences, or examples that connect with your audience on an emotional level.

Stories create a deeper engagement, evoke emotions, and help readers remember your message long after they’ve finished reading.

Edit and Proofread with a Critical Eye

Editing and proofreading are crucial steps in ensuring the quality of your content. Once you’ve written your draft, step away for a while to gain a fresh perspective. Then, return and read your content with a critical eye.

Look out for grammar and spelling errors, awkward phrasing, and inconsistencies. You can use Grammarly and Hemingway to help you with this.

Cut the Fluff

Be ruthless in eliminating fluff and filler words from your content. Get straight to the point and deliver your message concisely. Remove redundant sentences, clichés, and repetitive information. Your readers will appreciate content that respects their time and delivers value efficiently.

Give Actionable Takeaways

Don’t just inform your readers; empower them with actionable takeaways. Offer practical tips, step-by-step instructions, or specific strategies they can implement in their lives (like I’m doing right now with these practical tips to improve your blog’s writing).

Help them see the value in your content by providing clear guidance and inspiring them to take action.

Blogging Mistake #5: Ignoring Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

This is a biggie blogging mistake to avoid. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art and science of optimizing your blog content to improve its visibility in search engine results. When you optimize your content for search engines like Google, you increase your chances of appearing higher in the rankings when people search for keywords and phrases that are related to your blog.

To put it simply: When is the last time you clicked on a Google search result from page 25? Exactly. The websites on Google’s first page get the clicks. You ultimately want your blog posts to be there. SEO is how you get there.

How to Optimize Your Blog:

Do Keyword Research

The first step is to find relevant keywords and phrases that your target audience is searching for. You can use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest, or SEMrush to help you find high-ranking keywords with reasonable search volumes. Aim for a mix of long-tail and short-tail keywords that align with your blog’s niche and content.

I go more in-depth about finding keywords and using SEO for your blog in this post.

Optimize On-Page Elements

Pay attention to optimizing your on-page elements, like meta titles, meta descriptions, headings (H1, H2, etc.), and URLs. Add your target keywords naturally into these elements while ensuring they accurately reflect the content. WordPress plugins like Yoast SEO or All in One SEO Pack can help you do this.

Write High-Quality Content

Content is king in the world of SEO. Focus on creating valuable, well-researched, and comprehensive content that meets the needs of your target audience. Include relevant keywords naturally throughout your content, without overstuffing. Aim for readability, engaging writing, and information that answers your readers’ questions or solves their problems.

See how this stuff kind of comes full circle? It’s always about giving value to your readers.

Optimize Images

Images not only enhance visual appeal but also contribute to SEO. Optimize your images by compressing their file sizes without compromising quality (I use Smush for this – it’s free and does a great job compressing the images on my blog so they load faster).

You can test your blog’s loading speed with PageSpeed Insights (it’s free!).

Remember to use descriptive filenames (so name your image files something like keyword-here.jpg instead of leaving them at IMG5673773822.jpg) and include alt text that accurately describes the image using relevant keywords. This helps search engines understand the context and relevance of your images.

Use Internal Linking

Internal links help search engines navigate your blog and understand the relationship between different pages. Add links to your content to connect related posts or provide additional resources. This helps distribute link authority across your blog and improves user navigation. Be sure to use descriptive anchor text that gives clear context to the linked page.

Build Quality Backlinks

Earning high-quality backlinks from reputable websites is a crucial (but the most difficult) SEO strategy. Look for opportunities to collaborate with influencers or contribute guest posts to authoritative blogs within your niche.

Make quality content that naturally attracts backlinks, and promote your blog through social media. It’s not easy, but once you start getting a few backlinks to your blog, you’ll start to see major boosts in your blog’s traffic.

Optimize for Mobile

Google sees having a blog that’s optimized for mobile as a crucial factor. So don’t take this lightly. Make sure your website is mobile-responsive, with a design that adapts seamlessly to different screen sizes. You can test your website’s mobile friendliness with Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test.

Blogging Mistake #6: Not Using Social Media

Social media – the bustling hub where friends connect, influencers share their lives, and cats become famous overnight. It also plays a crucial role in driving traffic to your blog and building your brand. I know it takes time and can feel overwhelming trying to build a social media following, but overlooking the power of social media promotion can be a costly mistake for aspiring bloggers.

By embracing social media promotion, you tap into a world of opportunities to drive traffic, build your brand, foster a community, and amplify your reach. It’s like having your very own PR team working tirelessly to spread the word about your blog.

How to Use Social Media to Promote Your Blog

  • Optimize your pins with relevant keywords to increase their visibility in search results (in the graphic itself too – the algorithm can read text in pin images)

  • Include a clear call-to-action in your videos, directing viewers to visit your blog for more detailed information.
  • Engage with TikTok’s community by following relevant creators, liking and commenting on their videos, and participating in duets or collaborations.

Remember, each social media platform has its own unique dynamics and audience preferences. Tailor your content and strategies to suit the platform while staying true to your blog’s brand.

You don’t need to be on every social media platform. Pick a couple and really engage with the communities there. Be present on your chosen platforms and have fun!

Blogging Mistake #7: Lack of Engagement with Readers

Picture this: you’ve poured your heart and soul into creating valuable content for your blog, and readers are starting to take notice. But here’s the catch – blogging is not just about writing and publishing; it’s about building a community and fostering meaningful connections with your readers. Engaging with your audience is not only essential for creating a loyal following but also for taking your blog to new heights of success.

How To Engage With Your Readers

Respond to Comments

Make it a priority to respond to comments on your blog posts. Show appreciation for readers’ input, answer their questions, and engage in meaningful conversations. By acknowledging their contributions, you make readers feel valued and encourage further engagement.

Encourage Discussions

Sparking discussions is a powerful way to engage readers. Pose thought-provoking questions at the end of your blog posts to invite readers to share their perspectives. Respond to their comments and keep the conversation going. By facilitating meaningful discussions, you create an interactive environment that draws readers back to your blog.

Participate in Comment Sections

Engaging with your readers shouldn’t be a one-way street. Take the time to visit other blogs in your niche and leave thoughtful comments. Be the reader. By participating in discussions on other platforms, you expand your reach, connect with like-minded bloggers, and invite them to check out your blog.

Add Social Sharing Buttons

Make it easy for readers to share your content by including social sharing buttons on your blog. When readers find value in your posts, they can effortlessly share them with their networks, widening your reach and attracting new readers. I’m currently using the free Sassy Social Share plugin and I like how I can customize the colors to fit my blog.

Run Contests or Giveaways

Organize occasional contests or giveaways to incentivize reader engagement. Encourage readers to participate by leaving comments, sharing your content, or subscribing to your newsletter. Offering small prizes or exclusive content can generate excitement and motivate readers to engage with your blog.

Host Live Q&A Sessions

Hosting live Q&A sessions via social media platforms can be a fun way to bond with your community. Invite readers to ask questions about your blog, your expertise, or any related topics. Respond in real-time, providing valuable insights and enabling direct interactions with your audience.

Create Polls or Surveys

Polls and surveys are great for engaging readers and gaining insights. Use them to gather opinions on niche-related topics, and preferences for future content, or to get feedback on specific aspects of your blog. Share the results and thank readers for their contributions, making them feel involved in shaping your blog.

You can do this via polls on social media or by sending surveys to your email list (or both!).

Blogging Mistake #8: Forgetting About User Experience

Imagine: You stumble upon a blog that catches your attention with its intriguing title and promises of valuable content. Excitedly, you click the link and find yourself greeted by a cluttered, confusing layout, slow loading times, and an overall frustrating user experience.

You are out of there, never to return.

First impressions matter.

How To Create A User-Friendly Blog

Choose a Clean and Modern Theme

Opt for a clean and modern theme that aligns with your blog’s niche and overall branding. Look for themes that offer simplicity, readability, and flexibility. I use themes from HelloYouDesigns for my blogs and I love that they’re the perfect combination of stunning aesthetics and beautiful layouts for a pleasurable user experience.

hello you designs for optimized, beautiful wordpress themes

Streamline Navigation

Simplify your blog’s navigation to make it intuitive and user-friendly. Use clear and descriptive menu labels, and use drop-down menus for organized subcategories. Include a search bar to help readers find specific content quickly.

Embrace White Space

White space, or negative space, is the empty area between elements on your blog. Having ample white space enhances readability, reduces visual clutter, and creates a sense of elegance. Use it strategically to highlight important content and improve the overall aesthetics of your blog.

Break up your blog posts with headers and bullet lists, which also adds more white space to your blog and makes it much easier on your readers’ eyes.

Optimize for Mobile Devices

Again, I’m not going to repeat what I’ve already said in this blog post about optimizing for mobile, but it’s important. Make sure your theme is mobile-responsive (all of HelloYouDesign’s themes translate beautifully to mobile).

Consistent Branding

Maintain consistency in your blog’s branding elements like colors, logos, and fonts. Keep them the same throughout your blog and all social media associated with your brand. That way your readers will know it’s you no matter what platform they find you on.

Blogging Mistake #9: Not Monetizing the Blog

You’ve poured countless hours of effort into creating valuable content, building an engaged audience, and establishing your blog as a trusted resource. Monetizing your blog has the potential to turn it into a profitable business.

And when you earn money from your blog, you can spend more time creating content for your blog, which helps your readers. It’s a win-win!

How to Monetize Your Blog

Sponsored Content

Collaborating with brands to create sponsored content is a common monetization method. Start by identifying brands that align with your niche and audience. Reach out to them with a well-crafted pitch, highlighting the value you can offer. Make sure that the sponsored content integrates seamlessly with your regular content and provides genuine value to your readers.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing lets you earn a commission by promoting products or services and generating sales through your unique affiliate links. Research and join reputable affiliate programs relevant to your niche. Choose products or services that align with your audience’s interests and needs. Craft compelling content, like tutorials, that effectively highlights the benefits and encourages conversions.

I’ve written a dedicated blog post to get started with affiliate marketing here for you.

Advertisements

Displaying ads on your blog can be a straightforward way to generate income. You can join an ad network like Google AdSense, which matches relevant ads to your content. Be mindful of ad placement to maintain a good user experience. Experiment with different ad formats, such as banners, native ads, or in-text ads, to find what works best for your blog.

Digital Products

Creating and selling digital products can be a lucrative monetization strategy. You can make ebooks, online courses, or exclusive content for your audience. Leverage your expertise and offer valuable resources that help your readers solve problems or enhance their knowledge. Platforms like Teachable, Gumroad, or SendOwl (what I use to sell my digital products on this blog) can help you host and sell your digital products.

Membership or Subscription Model

If you have a loyal and engaged audience, offering exclusive content through a membership or subscription model can be a viable monetization option. You can provide premium content, access to a private community, or personalized services to your members. Platforms like Patreon or WordPress plugins like MemberPress can help you get your program up and running.

Consultation or Coaching Services

If you have expertise in your niche, offering consultation or coaching services can be a great option. Identify the specific needs of your audience and develop service packages that address those needs. Promote your services through your blog, social media, or email marketing. Make sure to set clear expectations, pricing, and deliverables to provide a highly valuable experience for your clients.

E-commerce or Merchandise

If you have a strong personal brand or a loyal following, you could sell physical products or merchandise related to your blog’s niche. This could include branded merchandise, handcrafted items, or curated products. Set up an online store using platforms like Shopify or the WooCommerce plugin to handle transactions and shipping.

When you’re starting to monetize your blog, remember to strike a balance between generating income and maintaining the trust and loyalty of your audience. Be transparent, provide value, and carefully select opportunities that align with your blog’s niche and your readers’ interests.

Blogging Mistake #10: Not Tracking Metrics

In the fast-paced world of blogging, it’s easy to get caught up in creating content and engaging with your audience without taking the time to track and analyze your blog’s performance. However, neglecting to track and analyze key metrics can hinder your progress and growth as a blogger.

Common Tracking Tools:

Google Analytics: Google Analytics is a powerful and widely used web analytics tool that offers comprehensive insights into your blog’s performance. It provides data on website traffic, audience demographics, user behavior, and conversion rates. With Google Analytics, you can track metrics such as page views, bounce rates, average session duration, and conversion goals. It also offers advanced features like audience segmentation, conversion funnels, and e-commerce tracking.

Social Media Analytics: Most social media platforms provide built-in analytics tools that let you track the performance of your blog posts and engagement metrics. Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, and Instagram Insights are just a few examples. These tools provide data on reach, impressions, engagement (likes, comments, shares), and follower growth. Monitoring social media metrics can help you understand which platforms are driving traffic to your blog and which content resonates the most with your audience.

Email Marketing Analytics: If you use email marketing to engage with your audience, tracking email metrics is essential. Email service providers offer their own analytics that let you monitor open rates, click-through rates, and subscriber behavior. These metrics help you gauge the effectiveness of your email campaigns and optimize your messaging to drive traffic to your blog.

Key Metrics to Focus On:

Website Traffic: Total visitors, unique visitors, and returning visitors to gauge the overall reach of your blog.

Engagement: Look at metrics like page views, time on page, and bounce rates to understand how users interact with your content. High engagement metrics indicate that visitors find your content valuable and are spending time on your blog.

Conversion Rates: Track conversion metrics like click-through rates, lead generation, or sales to assess the effectiveness of your call-to-actions and monetization strategies.

Audience Demographics: Gain insights into your audience’s demographics, including age, gender, location, and interests. This information helps you tailor your content and marketing efforts to better serve your target audience.

Referral Sources: Analyze which channels and sources are driving traffic to your blog. This helps you to focus your efforts on the most effective channels.

Social Media Metrics: Pay attention to metrics like follower growth, engagement rates, and post reach on social media platforms. These metrics can help you evaluate the impact of your social media efforts and see what kind of content your followers are responding to the most.

Remember, the key metrics you track should align with your blog’s goals and provide insights into your audience’s behavior, engagement, and conversion. Regularly reviewing these metrics and analyzing trends will help you make data-driven decisions and optimize your blog’s performance.

Blogging Mistake #11: Not Networking With Your Peers

Networking with other bloggers in the same niche can be helpful for your blog’s growth and success. You can cross-promote your own blog along with theirs, or create new content together.

It’s not just about what you can gain, but also about building meaningful relationships and contributing to the blogging community. Be genuine, engage in conversations, and offer support to others. Networking is a two-way street, and by fostering mutually beneficial relationships, you can create a supportive and thriving community of bloggers within your niche.

How To Connect With Other Bloggers:

Be Authentic

Authenticity is the foundation of meaningful connections. Be true to yourself and your blogging voice. Share your unique perspectives, experiences, and insights. Authenticity attracts like-minded bloggers who resonate with your content and values.

Engage with Genuine Interest

When interacting with other bloggers, show genuine interest in their work. Read their blog posts, leave thoughtful comments, and share their content on your social media (and tag them!). Engaging with a sincere interest in their success and ideas will make a lasting impression. Remember, networking is about building relationships, not just promoting yourself.

Collaborate on Projects

Collaboration is a powerful way to build connections and create valuable content. Look for opportunities to do guest posts, interviews, or roundup posts. Collaborations not only expose your blog to a wider audience but also strengthen the bond with fellow bloggers.

Share Knowledge and Resources

Building connections go beyond promoting your own content. Share your knowledge, expertise, and resources with other bloggers. Offer advice, recommendations, and support when needed. By providing value to your network, you establish yourself as a trusted and reliable source. Share relevant articles, tools, or tips that could benefit your fellow bloggers and their audience.

Be Responsive

When other bloggers reach out to you or leave comments on your blog, respond promptly and thoughtfully. Engage in conversations, answer questions, and thank them for their support.

Foster a Collaborative Mindset

Approach networking with a collaborative mindset instead of a competitive one. Look for opportunities to support and uplift other bloggers. Share their successes, recommend their content, and celebrate their achievements.

Blogging Mistake #12: Sleeping on Email Marketing

Building an email list allows you to directly communicate with your audience, nurture relationships, and drive consistent traffic to your blog. A way to collect emails should be the first thing you add to your blog once it launches.

How to Build and Optimize an Email List

Optimize Your Opt-In Forms

Place opt-in forms strategically on your blog to capture the attention of your visitors. Experiment with different placements like in your sidebar, at the end of blog posts, or as pop-ups triggered by exit intent (be careful with popup stuff, it’s super annoying. But it can be very effective).

Keep the form simple, asking for only essential information like a first name and email address. Make sure you clearly communicate the value of subscribing and offer an enticing incentive, like a free ebook or exclusive content. Give people a reason to subscribe to you (other than being awesome, of course).

Segment Your Email List

Segmenting your email list allows you to tailor your content to specific groups of subscribers. Divide your list based on their interests in your content, the lead magnets they signed up for, or past interactions. This lets you send targeted emails that resonate with each segment.

For example, if you have a fashion blog, you can create segments for different fashion styles, such as casual, bohemian, or business attire (based on what sign-up form they used), and send personalized recommendations to each segment.

Write Engaging Welcome Emails

The welcome email is your chance to make a great first impression and set the tone for your future communications. Use this opportunity to introduce yourself, thank your subscribers for joining, and deliver the lead magnet you promised. Share a brief overview of what subscribers can expect from your emails and encourage them to connect with you on social media or give them a list of some blog posts that would be helpful to them.

Be sure to make the email personal, friendly, and visually appealing to leave a positive impression. I use Flodesk for my email list because their platform is easy to use and the email designs they have are aesthetic af.

Create Valuable and Relevant Content

The success of your email campaigns hinges on delivering valuable and relevant content to your subscribers. Provide exclusive tips, insights, tutorials, or behind-the-scenes stories that align with your blog’s niche and your subscribers’ interests.

Make your emails informative, entertaining, and actionable to keep your audience engaged. You can repurpose your top-performing blog posts into email content or create exclusive content specifically for your email subscribers.

Blogging Mistake #13: Not Optimizing for Mobile

I’ve already mentioned this a couple of times in this list, but it’s so important that it deserves its own place. In today’s blogging world, mobile optimization is no longer optional—it’s a must.

Mobile optimization involves creating a responsive design that adapts to different screen sizes, ensuring that your blog is visually appealing and easy to navigate on computers, tablets, and phones of any screen size.

Here are some reasons why mobile optimization is crucial:

User Experience: Mobile users have unique browsing habits and expectations. They want to access information quickly and easily with minimal effort. A mobile-optimized blog provides a seamless and intuitive user experience, allowing visitors to navigate through your content, read articles, and engage with your blog without any frustrations. It enhances readability by adjusting font sizes, optimizing images, and using touch-friendly interfaces.

Search Engine Visibility: Search engines prioritize mobile-friendly websites in their search results. Google uses mobile-first indexing, which means it primarily crawls and indexes the mobile version of a website. If your blog is not optimized for mobile, it might drop in search engine rankings, leading to decreased organic traffic and visibility. Mobile-friendliness directly affects your SEO.

Say it again for the people in the back:

Mobile-friendliness directly affects your SEO.

Conversions and Engagement: Mobile optimization directly impacts your blog’s conversions and engagement too. A mobile-friendly design ensures that your call-to-action buttons are easily clickable, forms are user-friendly, and checkout processes are smooth. By making it convenient for mobile users to engage with your content and take desired actions, you increase the chances of generating leads and making sales.

How to Optimize Your Blog for Mobile

Choose a Responsive Design

Use a blog theme with a responsive design that automatically adjusts to different screen sizes. This ensures that your content, images, and layout are correctly displayed on any device.

Simplify Navigation

Streamline your navigation menu for mobile devices by using a clean and straightforward design. Make sure your navigation menu isn’t overcrowded, and use dropdown submenu items whenever you can. This translates well to mobile, where your main navigation menu will most likely become a hamburger menu.

Optimize Page Load Speed

Mobile users expect fast-loading websites. Optimize your blog’s performance by compressing images, minimizing CSS and JavaScript files, and make sure you have some kind of caching enabled through your hosting company. I use SiteGround and I love their easy out-of-the-box caching tools.

Test your blog’s speed using Google PageSpeed Insights and make whatever changes you need to get your site loading faster. For me, using Smush to cut down the size of my blog’s images has been a huge help! It’s a free WordPress plugin (that’s NOT an affiliate link, I’m just sharing the resources baby!), so check it out. You’re welcome!

Make Your Content Scannable

I mean, who even reads anymore?

Ok, guilty.

Seriously though, most people will do a combination of reading and skimming through blog posts, and mobile users tend to skim through content more than they read, so make it easy for them to find key information.

Use headings, subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs to break up text and improve readability. Highlight important points to draw attention. Like this.

See? Did I stop you from skimming? While I have your attention: Hello beautiful, how are you today? Okay, you can go back to skimming now, I don’t mind. This is a long-ass blog post.

Blogging Mistake #14: Falling Out of The Loop

Staying updated with industry trends and changes is crucial for the long-term success of your blog. Failing to adapt and evolve can hinder your growth and leave you behind.

The online world moves fast.

How to Stay Ahead in the Blogging World

Always Be Learning

Regularly stay informed about industry trends, new tools (like AI), and emerging new platforms. Follow reputable blogs like Backlinko and the ahrefs and SEMrush blogs for blogging and SEO stuff, plus leaders in whatever niche your blog is in. Join relevant online communities or Reddit forums where bloggers share insights and discuss the latest developments.

Experiment and Innovate

Don’t be afraid to experiment with new ideas, content formats, or marketing techniques. Stay open to trying out different approaches and be willing to adapt based on the feedback and data you receive. Innovation can set you apart from the competition and attract new readers.

Network and Collaborate

Build relationships with other bloggers in your niche. Engage with them on social media, leave thoughtful comments on their blog posts, and explore collaboration opportunities. You can talk about new things that come up in your niche together.

Adapt Your SEO Strategy

Stay updated with the latest SEO practices and algorithm changes. SEO is always changing, so make sure you’re caught up with current trends. Conduct regular SEO audits on your blog to identify areas for improvement. Optimize your content, meta tags, headings, and images to improve search engine visibility and organic traffic. Update old blog posts with fresh information to keep them current.

Embrace New Content Formats

Try out new content formats that you haven’t yet like videos, podcasts, or making infographics. These formats can help diversify your content offerings and engage your audience in different ways. See what works best for you and your niche and target audience.

Cultivate a Community

Focus on building a strong community around your blog. Encourage reader engagement through comments, discussions, and social media interactions. Create a sense of belonging and opportunities for your audience to connect with each other. If you have a strong community, you’re more resilient to the every-changing online world.

Stay Authentic and True to Your Voice

As the blogging world evolves, it’s important to stay true to your unique voice and authenticity. Your readers are drawn to your individuality and perspective.

Don’t lose sight of your core values and the reasons why you started blogging in the first place.

The underlying theme behind every successful blog is connection. People find your blog through SEO, social media, whatever. But they stay and they become a regular reader by their connection with you as the blogger. So stay true to who you are, because the world needs you.

Blogging Mistake #15: Giving Up

Building a successful blog takes time, patience, and persistence. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Your blog is probably going to suck in the beginning.

You’re going to get like 5 pageviews a month.

You’re going to spend hours writing blog posts and getting back nothing but crickets.

But the biggest mistake I see new bloggers make is this:

They stop blogging.

It takes time for search engines to index your content, rank it, and for your blog to gain authority.

I always see pins all over Pinterest with titles like “This is how I started a blog and got 100,000 pageviews in one month!”

And then you look at your own 4-month old blog and you barely have 100 pageviews per month. It’s discouraging.

But that pin title isn’t giving you the full picture. I’ve clicked through and read the articles out of curiosity, and it’s always something like they started a blog and then one year later after they were already getting decent traffic, they made some SEO change and their traffic doubled in one month.

Well, it’s easy to get 100,000 pageviews when you double your blog traffic of 50,000.

You know what’s double of 5 pageviews per month? 10. 10 pageviews. Yes it’s double the traffic…but so what?

The point I’m trying to make is that many blogs will give the impression that if you start your blog off the right way and you’re in the right niche, the traffic will be fast and easy to get.

And that’s just not true. No matter what niche you’re in.

So give it time. Find a blogging schedule that works for you so you won’t get burnt out. That could be one blog post per week, or 2 blog posts per month. Just stay consistent with it.

It’s wayyyy easier to go from 50,000 pageviews per month to 100,000 pageviews per month than it is to go from 10 pageviews per month to 10,000 pageviews per month. It’s momentum. And it builds as your blog grows.

The first year of blogging will be the hardest. Be mentally prepared for that, and don’t give up!

The worst mistake a new blogger can make is to give up and stop blogging right before their blog starts gaining momentum.

Be patient and persistent with your SEO efforts, continuously optimizing your content and building quality backlinks.

How To Stay Motivated as a New Blogger

Define Your Why

Why did you start blogging in the first place? What motivated you to share your ideas and experiences with the world? Understanding your why will fuel your passion and serve as a reminder during tough times.

Set Realistic Goals

Break down your long-term goals into smaller, achievable milestones. This will make your journey more manageable and provide a sense of progress along the way. Celebrate each milestone as you reach them, and use them as motivation to keep going.

Seek Support

Surround yourself with a supportive network of fellow bloggers, mentors, or like-minded individuals who understand the challenges and can offer guidance. Join blogging Facebook groups, follow other new bloggers on Instagram, and support each other. Hey, you can follow me on Instagram too! Let’s grow together!

Celebrate Small Wins

Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements along the way, no matter how small they may seem. Whether it’s hitting a milestone in subscribers, receiving positive feedback, or seeing increased engagement, these wins are proof of your progress and can boost your motivation to continue.

Practice Self-Care

Blogging can be very demanding, so it’s essential to prioritize self-care. Take breaks, practice mindfulness, exercise, and do things that recharge you.

Stay Focused on Your Passion

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Keep yourself inspired and excited about your niche by reading about the topics that light you up. Stay true to your passion, and let it guide your content creation. It’s the reason you’re blogging in the first place!

Learn from Setbacks

Challenges and setbacks are inevitable in any journey. Instead of letting them get you down, look at them as opportunities for growth. Analyze what went wrong, learn from your mistakes, and adjust your approach. Use setbacks as stepping stones to becoming a better blogger.

Practice Consistency

I know I’ve said this already, but consistency is key in building momentum and maintaining engagement with your audience. Set a realistic posting schedule and stick to it. Consistency builds trust, establishes your credibility, and keeps your blog top of mind for your readers.

Remember, every successful blogger faced challenges and setbacks along their path. It’s how you respond to those challenges and persevere that will determine your success.
