A jobs program payment card was used to withdraw millions of dollars in less than three days
“We’re making bread, we’re printing money right now,” a man shared in one of several related TikTok videos.
The man was referring to the New York City Summer Youth Employment Program (S.Y.E.P.). He said, “If you work S.Y.E.P., hit me up.”
In other videos on TikTok and Instagram during the height of the scam, other teenagers and adults boasted about it. They encouraged people to sell their cards to them.
As many as 30,000 cards were issued across New York to 14- to 24-year-olds who couldn’t be paid via direct deposit.
Some TikTok users warned people about falling for the S.Y.E.P. scam. Even still, program participants decided to sell their cards for $1,000 apiece, according to the law enforcement officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity since they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about an active investigation.
