Hey girl! Today, I want to share my short-lived self-publishing venture on Amazon KPP. It’s a tale of hard lessons learned and the importance of playing by the rules because, well, my Amazon KDP got banned. Yikes!
I dreamed of making passive income online, and quickly dove into self-publishing on Amazon KDP. Little did I know, my excitement would soon be met with a harsh reality check—a ban from the platform.
Well, it turns out, I unintentionally crossed a line that many aspiring authors might not even be aware of.
So, grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s talk about the ins and outs of Amazon KDP. I’ll spill the details of how I stumbled upon the banhammer and guide you on how to avoid the same fate.
After all, self-publishing success is not just about talent and creativity—it’s also about understanding and navigating the rules of the game.
Ready to dive in? Let’s do this!
What is Amazon KDP?
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a user-friendly platform that empowers authors to independently publish and distribute their books to a vast audience. You start by creating a KDP account, then upload your manuscripts.
Once uploaded, you can decide on pricing, distribution channels, and royalties. Amazon then makes these books available for purchase on Kindle devices and the Amazon website, and if you want, in print too.
The beauty of Amazon KDP lies in its ability to democratize publishing, allowing authors to reach readers globally without the need for traditional publishing gatekeepers. The platform’s royalties system ensures that authors earn a percentage of each sale, providing a potential source of passive income.
Amazon KPD Rules:
Maintain only one KDP account. Having multiple accounts can lead to a ban.
Respect copyright laws and avoid plagiarism. Ensure that your content is original or appropriately licensed.
Refrain from practices that manipulate reviews. This includes fake reviews, incentivized reviews, or any other attempt to influence the review system artificially.
Be mindful of the content you publish. Amazon KDP has strict guidelines against content that may be considered offensive or inappropriate.
Follow the guidelines for book covers and formatting to ensure a professional and consistent appearance.
Keep login information secure. If you run into issues accessing your account, follow Amazon’s account recovery procedures.
Notify Amazon if your book contains AI content – images or text.
Provide accurate and up-to-date tax information to prevent account suspension.
One of the foremost pitfalls to steer clear of on Amazon KDP is publishing inappropriate content. This spans a wide range, including explicit material, hate speech, and involvement in illegal activities. Amazon has stringent guidelines regarding content, and a failure to adhere to these rules can result in a ban.
Copyright Issues
Respecting copyright laws is non-negotiable in the self-publishing landscape. Authors must ensure that their content is original or properly licensed to avoid infringing on the rights of others. Plagiarism, intentional or not, can lead to severe consequences, including legal action. It’s crucial to conduct thorough research and, when necessary, seek permission or properly attribute content to avoid falling into the copyright trap.
Manipulating Reviews
While positive reviews are undoubtedly coveted, attempting to manipulate the review system is a huge no-no. Practices like as creating fake reviews, incentivizing positive feedback, or engaging in any form of review manipulation violate Amazon’s guidelines. The consequences can range from having reviews removed to outright account suspension. Focus on delivering quality content rather than resorting to artificial means to boost their reputation.
Multiple Accounts
OK, guilty🙋🏻♀️. This is why my Amazon KDP got banned. I had an Amazon KDP account from my old art blog. I sold a couple ebooks I made that taught some basic painting techniques. When I wanted to start making journals on Amazon KDP as part of The Minted Fox and my woo-woo blog, I couldn’t remember the password to that old Amazon KDP account.
So instead, I created a new account. I hadn’t published anything to the old Amazon KPD in years, and I had no intention of creating anything else on there. So I figured it would be fine just to let that account sit there (I was no longer actively selling the art ebooks), and start fresh with my new account.
Well, it wasn’t fine.
After my second journal was published, I got the ban smackdown.
Having multiple accounts, even if unintentional or due to forgotten login information, can lead to account suspension. Learn from my experience and don’t make this same mistake!
Tips To Ensure Amazon KDP Compliance
Thorough Research
Before diving into the world of self-publishing on Amazon KDP, do some thorough research on the platform’s guidelines. Familiarizing yourself with Amazon KDP’s rules and regulations is essential to avoid potential pitfalls and ensure a smooth publishing journey.
Take the time to explore the intricacies of content policies, cover guidelines, and formatting requirements. I know this is the boring stuff, but it was my fault for not reading these close enough that got me banned.
Regular Updates
Amazon KDP periodically updates its policies and guidelines to adapt to changing trends and address emerging issues. Make it a habit to check for any changes or updates to Amazon’s policies. This can be done by subscribing to newsletters, following official announcements, or joining online communities where fellow authors share insights and updates.
Account Management
Managing a single Amazon KDP account is not only a rule but also a best practice for authors. Avoid the temptation to create multiple accounts, as this can lead to account suspension and other complications.
If you encounter challenges accessing your account due to forgotten login information, follow Amazon’s account recovery procedures diligently. This may involve providing proof of identity or resetting passwords through verified channels.
Do NOT make another account if you can’t access your current one.
I hope sharing how my Amazon KDP got banned serves as a valuable lesson for aspiring authors and content creators. I still think Amazon KDP is an awesome opportunity to make passive income online.
So if you’ve been thinking about starting a self-publishing hustle, go for it! Just make sure you follow Amazon KDP’s guidelines. They don’t mess around, lol.
I wish you the best in your Amazon KDP journey! Happy writing!
