This post is on behalf of my (28f) girlfriend (29f). In December of 2024 my girlfriend was diagnosed with AML leukemia and I helped her file for Medicaid and we have been waiting ever since. Since 2021 she has been diagnosed with lupus and in 2023 she had a mechanical mitral valve placed in.
Through all of this it baffles me a little why it has taken so long for her to be approved. She had an appointment last week with her doctor and he told her that we’re looking at weeks to months left. He is scheduling her to be admitted in one week to try and attempt one last time for remission but it can possibly kill her due to having the mitral valve. It is very urgent for her if she is able to survive and go into remission to get a bone marrow biopsy immediately. We’ve already found matches and her caretaker for after recover is already covered it’s just insurance is required. He said if she is unable to get insurance in the case she is able to go into remission there is nothing left for him to do.
She has an appointment this coming Friday for an SSI phone call? Not really sure but the paper says it’s also related to Medicaid. The doctor is very unhopeful that she will be approved in time for Medicaid. The other option is us getting married and me adding her to my insurance but I’m unsure since this is a previous diagnosed condition if they will have a waiting period? ( it’s United healthcare for reference )
I apologize in advance for the length of this post, my head is just spinning and I can’t seem to find an answer and I’m hoping someone can help. Thank you.
- edit to add : we are going in the morning to get a marriage license but not turning it in until we know for sure Medicaid wouldn’t be the fastest option.
- update : ssi actually called today(8/21)and said she’s essentially approved but because she shares a bank account with her mom it shows her having too much money and that will most likely disqualify her so no Medicaid. We got the marriage license today but it’s just so much information we are very unsure what the right choice is.
