Picture a Tuesday, mid-2028. Less than three years away.
A rented box of a room, fan rattling on a milk crate. Breakfast is toast and tap water. You’ve got a job. But you’ve also got a diagnosis.
The diagnosis was manageable when the safety net held. When you got to your checkups, did your labs, found a doc who called back. But the net’s been cut now, and fashioned into hoops. Prove you’re worthy, that you can be on time, be online, run your life perfectly. Until you either don’t need the care anymore, or you die.
Miss once and you’re out.
One day you get one of those pieces of mail with the little plastic window. Open it and the letter inside says “terminated for non-compliance.”
No villain monologue. Just a sheet of paper with some ink on it. The result of a box you didn’t tick during a really bad week.
How we got here: The One Big Beautiful Bill. Sold to the public as responsibility, empowerment, FREEDOM. Backed by demagogues who walk around yelling slogans that reduce people to line items on a fiscal budget.
What it actually did: ~$800 Billion slashed from Medicaid budgets. 9.7–14.4 million projected to be off Medicaid. 80 required…
