So OpenAI launched their new mobile app this week. It’s Sora 2, their video generation model, wrapped in what they’re clearly hoping will be the next viral social platform.
Spoiler: it won’t be.
What They Built
The app lets you generate videos — 50 per day max. You type a prompt, wait a bit, and boom: AI-generated clips with surprisingly decent music, smooth cuts, and even character consistency across scenes.
There’s also a “Cameo” feature where you can put yourself (or your friends) into videos. Smart privacy controls too — only mutuals can generate videos of you by default, and you can review any unpublished drafts featuring you.
The feed? Pure brain rot. Pokémon videos, questionable IP violations, and content that’ll probably get them sued. Half my generation attempts got flagged for “content violations.” Even Resident Evil was too violent.
The Technical Flex (That Actually Impressed Me)
Here’s what’s interesting: most AI video models can’t generate clips longer than 5 seconds without things going sideways — like the video literally playing backward.
