Don Winslow’s Exceptional Mafia Saga Is A Must-Read for Fans Of Crime Novels
As a Crime/Mafia fiction writer myself, currently querying agents and seeking representation, I conducted a Google search for authors similar to Mario Puzo (The Godfather) and discovered Don Winslow.
Winslow is a master storyteller, and City On Fire is no exception. The story follows Italian and Irish Mafia families in New York in the 1980s and the war that erupts between them over a woman seeing men from both families, drug deals, and disagreements over union control and turf.
When the feds get involved and begin investigating, readers will discover that the agents aren’t all that they seem. Furthermore, Danny Ryan, a member of the Irish family, faces important decisions regarding his own future and that of his family. The question is, how far will he go and what choices will he make to provide a better life for his family, potentially crime-free, when crime is the only life he has ever known?
Winslow provides just enough detail into the actions of each family and its members while exploring the depths of New York’s criminal underworld. The action and the story flow at a perfect pace, keeping readers turning the pages. I plan on reading the following two books in the trilogy in the future.
