OpenAI just made impulse shopping part of the prompt.
You know how you ask someone what to get a friend/relation for their birthday, and then end up buying it on the spot no questions asked?
That’s what OpenAI wants to be now — the friend and the checkout line.
This week, the company quietly gave ChatGPT an “instant checkout” button.
You can ask, “What’s a good gift for a pet lover?” and go from idea to purchase all without leaving the chat.
It started with Etsy merchants (think crochet keychains and custom pet portraits). Next up: Shopify’s million sellers.
The shopping cart just slid into the chat window.
AI’s Mall Moment?
Search used to be the start of shopping. You Googled. You compared. You clicked Amazon.
That flow made Amazon and Google enormously powerful (and rich)— they decided what products we saw first.
Now OpenAI is stepping right into that space. If you never leave ChatGPT, you don’t hit Google. You don’t hit Amazon. You just… buy.
For now, OpenAI says recommendations are “organic and unsponsored.” It only takes a small fee when you actually buy.
