On Sunday in South Carolina, a 13-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after her heart began racing uncontrollably. She had swallowed an alarming number of Benadryl pills. Not because she was sick. Not because she wanted to get high in the usual sense. But because she had watched a viral video.
It’s called the “Benadryl Challenge.”
A dare circulating on social media urges kids to take excessive doses of the common allergy medication to induce hallucinations. It’s reckless, it’s deadly, and it nearly claimed another young life.
What Happened in South Carolina
The girl’s mother later discovered the videos on her daughter’s feed. Clips of teens popping pink pills, bragging about visions, and egging each other on. By the time she put the pieces together, her daughter was in a hospital bed, her heart under dangerous strain. Doctors managed to stabilize her — but the warning signs couldn’t be clearer.
A Challenge Built on Ignorance
Benadryl, or diphenhydramine, is an antihistamine. In high doses it can cause seizures, coma, or even death. Johnson & Johnson, which makes the drug, has issued repeated warnings about misuse. But for kids immersed in TikTok culture, the medical fine print is drowned out by the noise of peer validation.
