Task TRAILER REVIEW: Mark Ruffalo. Tom Pelphrey. Emilia Jones. HBO.

The trailer begins with Tom (Mark Ruffalo) brooding with his hands clasped on a kitchen table.

It cuts to Robbie (Tom Pelphrey) with his glorious beard. You hear his voiceover. “It’s easy to talk about forgiveness and mercy, if it’s not your loss.”

That’s very true. It cuts to men wearing skull masks entering a house at night. Someone is asleep on the couch. A masked man pointed the gun at the sleeping person’s head. Thankfully, they didn’t show what happened next.

It cuts to Tom at daytime inside a small town police station. His boss Kathleen (Martha Plimpton) said, “There’s been a spade of home invasions. They want me to put together a task force.”

You see the files with ID pictures of possible Task members: Lizzie (Alison Oliver), Alea (Thuso Mbedu), and Anthony (Fabien Frankel).

“Now?” Tom shook his head. “It’s not a great time — ”

“ — I don’t have any choice,” Kathleen cuts him off.

It cuts to Robbie with two guys driving a sedan at night. It cuts to them wearing the skull masks. Robbie hits a guy in the head with a handgun. He pointed the gun at the man. “Where’s the money?”

The man on the floor stared at him, “You’re the one causing all the problems, huh?”

He then SMACKED the guy on his face with the handgun.

It cuts to daytime. A child (young boy) ran and hugged Robbie on his right leg. That’s sweet.

It cuts to nighttime. Robbie talking to his wife in a car. “I’m gonna take their money so we could have a better life.”

It cuts back to daytime in Robbie’s house. “Hey, Dad,” in the kitchen, a young girl hugged Robbie. You see Robbie, the two kids, his wife Maeve (Emilia Jones), and another guy.

It cuts to a gang of bikers at night. It’s very Sons of Anarchy.

It cuts to very early in the morning. There are police cars around a house. Tom gets out of the car. There’s another home invasion.

You hear the voice of an unseen man, “We need to find this crew before a turf war escalates.”

It cuts to a biker in a warehouse rolling up chains to his fist.

It cuts to another biker cocking a handgun.

It cuts to daytime. You see trees and greens in the woods. The sun is beautiful. Robbie looked up to the sun. You then see him shirtless with two other guys running. It’s revealed that they jumped towards the lake. You hear his voiceover. “When we’re too deep into something, you just cant see what other’s see.”

It cuts to nighttime. A white sedan flipped and fell off a cliff.

It’s still nighttime. Robbie puts on the skull mask inside his car.

It’s still nighttime. It’s the Task team in full gear. They entered a house loaded and ready to shoot.

It cuts to Maeve talking to Robbie. “You’re not gonna ruin their lives just because you ruined yours.”

Robbie seems to be living a double life. He is a sweet family man. But he is part of a biker gang that robs people and invades their homes. He probably made mistakes in the past that got him into the gang. But now, he’s in too deep.

It’s daytime. Tom looks at a cemetery from his car. He puts his head down, his left hand on his head. His voiceover says, “You ever done something you can’t be forgiven for?”

He probably made a terrible mistake in the past that caused someone’s life.

It cuts to him SMASHING the dining table with his fist as you see tears in his daughter’s eyes. “Don’t do that! God damn it!”

His wife seemed to leave the dining table.

In her daughter’s room, he told her, “I haven’t been a very good father to you lately.”

It cuts to daytime. You see Robbie playing with his kids on the lawn.

It cuts to nighttime. Robbie talking to Maeve in the car. “My kids ask me if their mother is ever coming back? And I ain’t got an answer.”

It cuts to him dancing with his daughter.

It cuts to him in bed, hugging his sad son. “She’s in your heart too.”

I’m guessing Maeve separated from Robbie because he doesn’t like the life he chose. But she should live with her kids. Why is Robbie the single Dad?

Tom and Anthony are in the car. Tom told Anthony, “If things got terribly wrong, people wanna know why God let it happen.”

It cuts to Tom and Alea wearing their FBI jackets. It cuts to two biker gang members wearing their vests. It shows the two groups in the show — the Task (FBI) vs. the Biker Gang. The show is a hit (Number #1 in HBO for 38 days as of writing) because you see the personal lives of Tom and Robbie. They represent opposite sides of the law. They both have families with personal issues. That’s very relatable to a lot of people.

Robbie held the neck of Cliff (Raul Castillo) with both hands and stared at his eye. “Haven’t I always found a way out?”

Looking down, Cliff said, “You’ve never did anything like this?”

It cuts to Maeve shouting at Robbie.

“I don’t wanna hear it. Lie, after lie, after lie…”

Robbie had both hands covering his ears. He is shaking in anger. Maybe he doesn’t want to EXPLODE over Maeve.

It cuts to the two kids running into Maeve’s arms. That’s sweet. Maybe they reunited.

It cuts to the woods. It’s daytime. Robbie shot at someone behind him. I think it’s full on CHAOS. It’s a run-and-gun chase scene between the FBI and the biker gang.

The trailer ends with Tom and Robbie pointing the gun at each other. You hear their voiceover.

“You can still go home,” Tom said.

“Even if I wanted to go home, I don’t know the way no more,” Robbie responded.
