Amazing Epic Fantasy Writing Prompts

Unlike the regular fantasy genre, epic fantasy is characterized by its grand scale, and the richly detailed histories, cultures, and landscapes of a fictional world. Hence, writing a novel or story within this genre requires a lot of creativity and inspiration. When that runs out, it can be extremely frustrating to build a whole new world with only the bits and pieces of a story idea.

Thankfully, you don’t have to create your story from scratch. Creative writing prompts are a great way to get your creative juices flowing and get you inspired to write a full-fledged epic fantasy novel that will have your readers hooked from the start. In the following article, you’ll find epic fantasy writing prompts for plot ideas, prompts for magical powers, and ideas to create amazing, original characters.

Writing Prompts For Inspiration

The Dragon’s Den: Write a story about a young woman who grows up in a small village on the outskirts of a kingdom. Legend has it that long ago, there were rumors of a family that everyone in town loved. This family was practically perfect, they were kind, good-looking, and intelligent. However, at night, they turned into these big winged creatures. So, locals started to call them dragons. Jealous of their power and popularity, a witch cast a spell on them, rendering them infertile and ensuring the end of their lineage. Yet, your protagonist begins to notice scales forming on her skin, hinting at her transformation. How will the villagers react to this revelation?

Forbidden Love: Write a story about two characters from next door kingdoms or lands who fall in love with one another. Their forbidden romance causes their two kingdoms to go to war with one another.

Betrayal: Write a story about a fantasy world where every royal family has a sorcerer as an adviser. Sorcerers are not allowed to ever take the throne due to the immense power they would wield. However, when a young prince manifests magical abilities, people start to question his legitimacy. Is he the rightful heir, or a product of infidelity? With the kingdom on edge, can he claim his birthright?

Redemption: Write a story about a royal guard who was unfairly shunned and banished from his homeland. Years later, when the king dies and the only legitimate heir is a disgrace to the royal family, he learns that he is the king’s bastard son and has a claim to the throne. Will he be able to redeem himself in the eyes of the kingdom?

Sacrifice: Write a story about a group of young women who decide to go against the norms of their kingdom and are striving for independence without having to rely on men. The ruler permits their existence under two conditions: they must keep to themselves, avoid interaction with passersby, and they must never re-enter the kingdom’s borders.

One day, while gathering berries, a young girl comes across a handsome stranger in the forest. She immediately is enamored by this mysterious young man and they decide to continue secretly meeting. She falls pregnant and finds out that the man she was seeing and her new best friend are the prince and the princess. Now that she has broken the rules, how will this group of young women survive the wrath of the king? What sacrifices will they have to make?

Immortal: Once upon a time, an old woman stumbled upon a secret passageway. As she entered, she discovered a hidden elixir that allowed her to reverse her aging and become youthful again. Years later, a queen who is afraid of getting old decides to find that elixir and drink it in the hopes that she will remain youthful. To the detriment of the nation, she devotes all of her resources to this search which angers the locals.

Lost Civilisation: Write a story about a group of friends with supernatural powers who discover a mysterious map that leads to a legendary lost civilization. Legend has it that the city is filled with so much gold, that it would make any man richer than the king himself.

The Sirens song: Write a story about a world where real-life sirens exist but they are extremely difficult to find. However, once someone has found them, they can ask them for a bottled song in exchange for something valuable. When a character uses this bottled song, they can put others in a trance-like state and make them do anything they want.

Dark Secret: Write a story about a character who lives in a world where magical creatures and humans live separately and are not allowed to interact. Magical creatures are considered aberrations by human society and considered less than others. Your character doesn’t know much about their biological parents because they were abandoned as a baby and were found on the doorstep of their current adoptive parents. One day, as they hit puberty, they discover that they might be a descendent magical parent. How do they cope with information considering he has been taught all his life to hate magic? How does his adoptive parents react to the news?

Dark Magic: Once upon a time, a little girl accidentally discovered a book that taught him how to harness the power of dark magic. Curious, he decided to practice this forbidden art, unaware of its corrupting influence. If a person practices this kind of magic too many times, they become consumed by darkness. This boy’s story is told as a cautionary tale to children so they never make the same mistake. However, one day, a naive and daring teenager decides to try it out anyway and surprisingly remains in control of these dark powers without losing himself.
