Khalid’s last album just a little over a year ago, Sincere, was just not good. It fell flat in a lot of ways outside of a couple tracks and was as gray and boring as the album cover. So I was surprised to see he had already begun a rollout for another album a few months ago.

after the sun goes down comes in the wake of Khalid publicly coming out, and all the promotion for it leans into this newfound freedom — a staunch departure of his usual minimal-ish and laid back style. The album cover is loud, handsy, depicts a lot of movement, the bright blue hair drawing your attention to the subject of the photo. Compared to his past three albums, each featuring Khalid, none were designed to highlight his presence in the photo given the breadth of the landscape around him.

He is finally comfortable enough to accept that the music he produces can serve as a medium for his personal affectations. In fact, all mentions of the past are scrubbed from his Instagram, truly signaling a new era of not only music, but of Khalid.

But will this shift to pop empowerment pay off?
