Identifying Relevant Job Opportunities
When I say I spend a lot of time researching different hiring markets, analyzing trends, and reading job descriptions- I mean A LOT of time. And let me tell you, there are a TON of jobs in the world, but not all jobs are going to be a good fit for you, specifically. Equally, not all job descriptions are actually good- some may be vague, while others might be packed with jargon and industry-specific terms that make absolutely no sense.
ChatGPT can analyze job descriptions and match them to your skills and preferences. It goes beyond keyword matching and understands the context and relevance of your qualifications to the job requirements. ChatGPT can also engage in conversations with you to refine your job search criteria, helping you clarify your preferences, such as location, industry, company size, and more, ensuring opportunities you explore align with your needs.
ChatGPT can even set up job alerts for you based on your criteria, sending you notifications when new job listings that match your preferences become available! What I like most about ChatGPT is that it can provide insights into specific industries, helping you understand which sectors are experiencing growth and which are more competitive, assisting you in making informed choices.
Lastly, as a diverse coach that works with a lot of diverse professionals, I am always thinking about company culture and values. ChatGPT can provide information about a company’s culture, values, and employee experiences, enabling you to assess if it’s a good fit for you. Because as we know, not all companies are a good fit for all people- and that’s ok! It’s about finding the right place for you to be your authentic self.
Preparing for Interviews
Perhaps one of the most well-known uses of ChatGPT in careers right now is its ability to help people prepare for interviews. I’ll be doing a separate blog on this topic too because to properly prep for interviews, you need to research and understand the company and the specific job you’re interviewing for. Yes, I know it’s time-consuming, but essential for success.
ChatGPT can provide detailed information about the company, its mission, values, recent news, and the specific job you’re interviewing for. It assists you in understanding the organization thoroughly., massively streamlining your research phase of interview prep. ChatGPT can then create realistic mock interview scenarios tailored to the job you’re applying for, simulating interview questions, allowing you to practice your responses, refine your communication skills, and build confidence.
If you are a bit new to interviewing, ChatGPT can offer guidance on answering common interview questions, including tips on structuring your responses, highlighting your qualifications, and addressing behavioral questions effectively. And even though it’s just an AI, ChatGPT can even provide strategies and techniques to manage interview nerves. It offers advice on staying calm, composed, and confident during the interview.
Lastly, and most importantly, after conducting mock interviews, ChatGPT can provide feedback on your performance, pinpointing areas where you can improve. This iterative process helps you refine your interview skills over time and really boost your confidence!
Leveraging ChatGPT Wisely…
If you use ChatGPT in the right way (start researching best practices for prompt engineering), with the right prompts, you can indeed create a customized job search strategy that incorporates who you are, what you want from work, your skills/abilities, your interests and more.
While ChatGPT and AI technology can be invaluable in various aspects of your job search, it’s important to strike a balance and understand the limits of AI. ChatGPT should be viewed as a supplement, not a replacement for human expertise as only human experts have a deep understanding of the nuances of your field, industry trends, and regional variations that AI might not fully comprehend.
A human career coach or mentor can provide highly personalized advice that takes into account your unique background, goals, and challenges. And if you have been through a job search before, you know this to be true, job searching can be super emotionally taxing, and human experts can offer a level of emotional support and empathy that AI cannot replicate.
Lastly, AI lacks the ethical decision-making and moral judgment that most humans possess, which can be critical in many job-related situations. So, add AI to your toolkit, but remember, people hire people, so be sure you are staying connected to your job search humanly as well.
