Are we just hitting the slot machines of easy entertainment, paying with our time and brain cells?
Let’s cut right to the chase: watching short videos/reels/TikToks/… is not good for us, and we all know it. They give us lots of entertainment in very little time. They keep us watching, scrolling and bingeing. It’s super convenient when there’s some time to kill, but very inconvenient when trying to do something productive.
These videos are so addictive that I find myself scrolling through them sometimes when watching TV, at work, or while being on the toilet. I know that’s unhygienic, but come on, I know you do it too!
Generally, it’s hard to stop scrolling because of a principle that casinos use, (very successfully btw) to keep us hooked. Scrolling is just like hitting a slot machine: the swipe-down movement, the endlessness, and the hope that the next reel could be the most amazing reel ever (=the biggest win). It’s unlikely but it could happen. That is what keeps our brain addicted.
The lottery works on a similar principle. Winning is very very unlikely, but in order to have a chance at winning, you have to play.
