What should my blog niche be?

A lot of times bloggers get stuck in analysis paralysis when it comes to choosing a blogging niche, but it really comes down to determining two very simple things.

You want to choose a niche market that:

  1. Compliments your interests and strengths and
  2. Has the potential to be profitable

What are your strengths and interests?

First, you need to make sure that you really enjoy talking about the niche topic you choose because you will be doing it a lot and hopefully for many years.  The best way to build authority in your niche market is to put out content consistently– week after week.

  • What can you talk about for hours?
  • When people come to you for advice, what is it typically on?
  • What specific skills/talents do you have to offer?

So if you love eating carbs and decide to start a blogging business all about weight loss with keto because it’s trendy and profitable, your not going to be very enthusiastic about the topic.

It can be tempting for a beginning blogger to choose a lucrative niche like a weightloss or technology but if you do not have knowledge in these areas or find enjoyment in this topic, it will show in your writing and how you show up for your audience.

If you do not have an interest in the subject you are building a business around, you will not be motivated to put in the hard work and dedication that is required to grow an online business.  In addition, your readers will lose trust in you, which is a sure way to tank your business fast.

Is it profitable?

Second, if you want to build a profitable blogging business the next step is to make sure that your chosen niche actually has the potential to be profitable.

If you want to have a blogging business and not just a hobby, you need to make sure that there is actually a profitable need and demand for what you have to offer before you create an entire business around the topic.

This means you will need to do some market research. You need to find out what your ideal customer’s pain points are and if they are significant enough for them to want to spend money on them

Never assume what your audience needs.

market research
  • Go into Facebook groups related to a niche you are interested in and see what questions your ideal reader is asking.
  • Ask family, friends or people in your FB communities that fall into your niche category if they would be willing to do a 10-15 minute Zoom call with you to discuss the challenges they face with your specific topic.
  • Analyze the competition.  Is there any?

A lot of people think that competition is a bad thing, but the truth is a niche with a lot of competition typically means there is a lot of money to be made.  It indicates that there is a market for what you are offering.

If there aren’t any others blogging in your niche, this could be a sign that there really isn’t a market for what you have to offer.

Which Blog Niches are most profitable?

Some niches will be more profitable than others. Here are 5 profitable broad niche markets.

  1. Relationships: Parenting, Marriage, Divorce, Dating

2. Health: Weight loss, healthy eating, dieting, fitness, mental health

3. Wealth: investing, saving money, personal finance, retirement

4. Self-improvement: beauty, self-esteem, confidence, mindset, life coaching

5. Passions: Art, Travel, Photography, crafting, homesteading, technology, gardening, hobbies, sports, pets

If you choose a broad niche market, you will want to narrow it down to a specific audience within the larger market

Why do I need to narrow down my niche?

In the blogging world today, you need to get very specific if you want to grow an online blog and business.

This is the biggest mistake that I see new bloggers and business owners making.  They try to be everything to everyone and end up getting nowhere.

For example, if you wanted information about becoming a marathon runner would you be more likely to follow a blogger who specifically blogs about marathon training, endurance, marathon mindset, what foods to eat during training? Or a blogger who has a fitness blog that talks about running, but also biking, swimming, tennis, etc.

Which blogger comes across as someone who could help you more?  Who would you more likely invest money in via courses, training, etc?

Most likely you choose the first one right?  You want someone who gets you, your problems, your goals, etc., and helps you with the problem you are looking to solve.

You want to become the go-to expert in your field for your specific audience.  Instead of trying to help everyone, you need to really narrow in on what your audience needs and speak directly to them.  This is the key to a successful blog.

Once you niche down, it is so much easier to come up with blog post ideas, services/products, and marketing materials, because you know exactly who you are talking to and can cater your messaging towards them.
