And, my brain became mashed potatoes!
The shock came quietly, on a Sunday.
I tapped open my screen time report, expecting something mildly embarrassing. What I saw felt closer to alarming.
5 to 6 hours. On my phone.
Some calls. A bit of work. But mostly… aimless screen-swiping.
How did I even get here? I pride myself on being thoughtful with my time. I don’t have Instagram. I read books. I have kids, a job, and a brain. I even use X (formerly Twitter) through Safari and not the app — just so I wouldn’t get addicted.
Clearly, none of that worked.
Turns out, I’m not alone. Indians now spend over 5.5 hours per day on their phones — among the highest in the world. Globally, mobile-first users average 4.8 hours a day.
And no, we’re not all editing spreadsheets or learning Spanish.
Most of it is spent inside algorithm-driven apps — nudged, swayed, and seduced by endless content.
The slow hijack
It didn’t happen overnight.
X used to be my space for curiosity and clarity. Long threads. Tech deep dives. Pocket philosophers. The stuff that made me feel smarter for being online.
