My mom got married on TikTok.
Well, not on TikTok, but close enough. She met a man there — from Pakistan — and the whole thing unfolded like one of those chaotic reality shows where you can’t tell if it’s scripted or just life being life.

The twist? My mom is in her seventies.

You’d think by that age, you’ve learned a few lessons. That you’d have mastered honesty, self-awareness, or at least the art of breaking big news to your children in a way that doesn’t feel like a betrayal. But my mom? She went about her new marriage like a fifteen-year-old sneaking out after curfew. Which is ironic, because she was fifteen when she got married the first time.

And sixteen when she had her first child.

Her past forced her to grow up before she was ready — but emotionally, she never quite caught up. She learned how to survive, but not how to self-reflect. She became resourceful, but not responsible in the way adults should be when it comes to love, communication, or consequences.

So when she met this man online, she didn’t tell anyone. She lied about where she was traveling, made up stories about why, and pretended everything was business as usual. My sister, who knew about him but didn’t know how far things had gone
