In this guide i will explain the fundamentals step to take when you’ll get in trouble with driver’s issues on Windows.
Unknown Device issue is one of the most common errors in Windows, but also it is difficult to understand the cause that generate the error. Sometimes you can fix this issue by updating the drivers. There are three ways to update the drivers and fix problems, but also will explain exactly what you have to do if you get in trouble with a specific error code. If we are in search of a rapid solution we can click on “windows” start menu and type in the search bar “troubleshooter” and choose “Hardware and Devices” by going throught the suggested options (also you can dowload the diagcab at this link: http://aka.ms/diag_device). If it doesn’t work we can proceed to the next step:
- Update the driver via Device Manager
The first step is to know and understand why the driver stopped work. Often we got this problem after an Windows Update. If we are in this case we can simply roll back the driver with a stable version or try to upgrade automatically so:
At first we have to make a right click on “windows” icon in the start menu and choose “Device Manager”. Note: There are a couple other ways you can access Device Manager in Windows that might be quicker that the Control Panel method. For example, you could instead use the devmgmt.msc command to open Device Manager from the command line.
Probably we’ll see an error on the device and with right click and then will choose “Update driver Software..”. Select “Browse my computer for driver” if we are secure that driver stopped work after an update; and if we are fortunate we can see one or more driver on the list, so we can try a driver roll-back option. If it doesn’t work we can choose “Search automatically for updated driver software”:
2. Download and Install the driver Manually:
If you download driver from the PC manufacturer or the device manufacturer, you need at least to identify the device name. But for Unknown device, it is impossible to get their device name directly. In this case, it is hard or impossible to find the right driver. Fortunately, every device has its own hardware id. You can use the hardware id to identify the unknown device then find the right driver. Follow this steps below to get the hardware id of the unknown device.
1. Go to Device Manager.
2. Right-click on the Unknown device and click Properties.
3. Click Details tab and click the drop down menu of Property.
Select Hardware Ids from the drop down menu and the value field will pop up with a list of values. Right-click on the top-most value and choose Copy from the menu. After that, paste the value into Google search engine and you’ll identify the unknown device. Then you can go to the PC manufacturer’s website or the device manufacturer’s website to download the driver you need. Note you need to know the version of Windows in order to download the correct driver.
3. Update the driver using Third party software:
Go to https://drp.su/en and click on the button “install all required drivers”. Execute the software and on menu choose “Software” tab and uncheck all the entries. After that we’ll go back in Driver tab and select in first time only the driver we want to update and if it doesn’t work we can try with a fully update. In most cases with this 3 simple step we can resolve the drivers problem; but there are also few other cases that we have to go in the deep in order to resolve particular errors code:
Error code 19:
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. To fix this problem you should uninstall and then reinstall the hardware device. (Code 19)
Download and install Devices Remover from Majorgeeks: https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/device_remover_543c.html
Open the software and select the desired driver. Search on the right tab “Selected devices Proprieties” “DeviceClassGuid” and copy the information text. Open windows tab and search “Regedit”. Righ click and select “execute as administrator”. Select “Computer” and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Now search the text we have copied under the “Class” section and explore the key and subkeys in search of the string “UpperFilters” and “LowerFilters”. If you can find it delete these keys and restart the computer. After the restart if the driver was removed or is broken you need to reinstall it.
Error code 10:
In this case we have to be sure that we didn’t make an hardware change or an bios upgrade. A lot of time a wasted time because it was an hardware problem. Be sure to have correctly done all the step above and after that you can download DriverHub in order to make an driver rollback. Make sure that you didn’t have disable anything with an utility software given from your manufacture device or that you didn’t press any hardware button that can disable the device. You can always perform a bios default factory reset, but you need to understand if you pc need a specific bios custom setting, like ahci-raid settings for disk compatibility. After that if it doesn’t work you can search on your manufacture’s website for a bios upgrade. Please be sure that you have the ability and the expirience to perform this action because you can damage irreparably your pc.
Please let me know if you’ve fixed a Code 10 error using a method that I don’t have above. I’d like to keep this page as accurate as possible. For other drivers error don’t esitate to contact me. I will help you to understand better the cause of the problem.
