May is the scariest time of the year for me. It’s Medicaid Redetermination time, when the state government potentially punishes persons with disabilities for earning a living and thus being as independent as possible. Not only do most recipients rely on Medicaid for medical expenses, we also depend on it for personal care assistance. The latter involves daily routine such as bathing, grooming, dressing, feeding, and toileting.
We get the dreaded letter every year, which sinks our hearts and revolts our stomachs. It either requests that we re-apply or send certain documents like bank statements or pay stubs. Since I’m self-employed, I need to send invoices and/or tax returns. Although I comply this year as I do every year, they sent me a letter saying benefits would stop at the end of the month. It also stated that I could request a hearing, which I did.
Just registering for the hearing poral is as if you’re trying to enter Fort Knox. I failed the first couple of times I tried to register I got error messages saying my browser had an ad blocker or I was a robot. (I didn’t know robots got benefits and requested hearings!). Although I used another browser, it requested one-time protection (OTP) codes three times and my personal information twice. The portal then had to be linked to my state benefits account. Thank goodness Google saves all my passwords!
