Dental Health Has an Important Place in All Health; Don’t Ignore It

Too often, our insurance plans, Medicare and Medicaid, refuse to pay for dental health services, which adds to their costs for other health reimbursements.

The root cause of the development of major depressive disorder, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders is increased levels of inflammatory substances in the brain. We know that inflammation is associated with depression and now we are beginning to realize how important containing any inflammation in our bodies is in relation to changes in our mental health. One of the areas of concern is dental health, which has, for too long, been left out of the equation and has contributed to serious health problems.

One study that included a major inspection of the professional literature has provided solid evidence for reconsideration of dental health as it relates to mental health. From 1995 to 2023, a literature search was conducted in Google Scholar and PubMed pertaining to mental disorders and oral health approaches. All English-language publications, including original research papers, review articles, and book chapters, were assessed in accordance with the inclusion criteria. What did they find?
