The up-and-coming pop star proves his stellar songwriting ability despite his youth and inexperience.

Even though award shows get worse and worse each year, I always enjoy tuning in. If nothing else, I can live for some stunningly beautiful, high-fashion garments, wince at some hideously ugly, high-fashion garments, and discover the new up-and-comers that might have eluded me.

That’s how I came across Shane Boose aka Sombr, when I watched the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. Nominated for three categories that evening, I was struck by his stick-like 6’7” frame, and sense of casually cool, suave style (and his 2005 birthdate, I feel ancient now).

Intrigued, I added his debut album I Barely Know Her to my review schedule, and I’m so glad I did, because Sombr has quickly become one of my favorite rising pop stars. Combining slick pop production with elements of lo-fi and bedroom pop, he’s created a surprisingly singular sound, and paired it with emotionally intelligent lyrics about unrequited love, failed romance, and friendships that develop into something more.

Opening track “Crushing” lets you know exactly what Sombr is about from minute one. Driven by deep piano and bright electric guitar, he sings of a relationship going sour, and imagining alternate versions of history had they never met. I love…
