ChatGPT Goes Free in India — But Why?

What looks like kindness is actually a calculated move to shape how a billion people meet AI

Source : Reuters

When I first scrolled past the post saying “Sam Altman just made ChatGPT Go free for India”, I honestly thought it was another internet rumour.

But then I checked the sources — Reuters, The Indian Express, Times of India. It’s real.

OpenAI is giving Indians one full year of free access to ChatGPT Go — the premium plan that runs on GPT-5, with all the good stuff: image generation, file uploads, Python analysis, custom GPTs, and longer limits.

Not the basic version. The powerful one.

And just like that, millions of Indians are about to get their first taste of what the world’s most advanced AI can really do — for free.

It sounds generous, right? But I don’t think it’s generosity.

It’s strategy. The kind of move that rewrites how an entire country uses technology.

The Shockwave Move

OpenAI confirmed that starting November 4, 2025, every user in India can use the ChatGPT Go plan free for a year.
