I love a story that starts out following a seemingly normal, or as normal as horror gets, path, only for it to take a turn that you never saw coming That is exactly what happened for me in Gone To See The River Man by Kristopher Triana. The shift in gears make you look at the main character in a whole new light, making the second half of the story all the more horrific.

The character in question is Lori, a woman obsessed with a jailed murderer names Edmund. We learn about Edmund’s crime in small doses, but more than enough to understand that he is not a man who should be the object of anyone’s affection.

Edmund sends Lori on a trip that is a test of her devotion to him. She has to travel to a small town to retrieve a key, which she then has to deliver to the mysterious River Man. Her trip is made all the more challenging when she is forced to take along her mentally challenged sister, Abby.

With each step along the journey, new details are revealed about the characters that add some horrific depth to the story. It seems that the closer they get to their final destination, the more depraved and unsettling those reveals become.

I am not going to share details, but much of what is going on is sure to be triggering to many, so be sure to do a little research on this book before you dive in.
