Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein (2025) is a stunning visual achievement with powerful performances from Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Jacob Elordi — but it can’t escape the shadow of James Whale’s 1931 masterpiece.

A Visionary Filmmaker, A Familiar Monster

I have endless respect for Guillermo Del Toro. He’s one of the few modern filmmakers whose work I anticipate with the same excitement I reserve for Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino. His love of cinema — visible both in his films and his social media presence — is infectious.

And yet, here comes the heel turn: I’m not a big fan of his new take on Frankenstein.
