ChatGPT is a terrible attorney, but it still helped me win a lawsuit.

I own a Glowforge. Glowforge is a laser engraver/cutter. Its been a money pit from the beggining. A couple months ago the handle that is used to open and close the unit just fell off. Unfortunately this handle is tied in to the safety sensor that let's the unit know its closed. So the handle falling off means the unit is bricked.

I contacted Glowforge about repairing the unit. Glowforge offered me 3 things:

Their first suggestion was to ask the community how to repair it and repair it myself, but they made sure i knew I'd be repairing it at my own risk and They weren't responsible for the results. I declined.

Their second offer was to sell me an entirely new Glowforge! And maybe this time I could buy the elite model instead of pro! I declined.

Their third offer was to allow me to repair it at my own time and expense. They would give me contact info for repair company. I declined.

Enter ChatGPT. I was pretty sure this was a shitty response from Glowforge and I thought I might have grounds to sue them. So I told ChatGPT what had happened and that I was considering suing. ChatGPT responded with all sorts of helpful suggestions. Including things like how to get them to respond via email with admissions that they could repair the unit they just weren't gonna.

I was fairly confident i had a case. But, for me at least, the legal system is intimidating. It feels like a big escalation. But having HypemanGPT in my corner helped me get over that initial reluctance.

Some of the things ChatGPT helped on were:

Organizing my case. Making sure I had photos of the right sort. All the emails printed out. All documents related to case organized in an easy to read way.

Preparing for arguments from Glowforge.

Preparing my arguments for why Glowforge should be liable.

Identifying all the expenses that I could ask to have covered.

Less helpful things were when it tried to come up with arguments for me rather than helping me refine my own arguments. ChatGPT had some arguments that were uh… tortured to say the least. Some mind boggling leaps I couldn't even follow without asking for lots of clarification. Didn't use any of those.

I made one notable and almost disastrous mistake. I tried to fact check every single thing ChatGPT came up with so I didnt get stuck presenting hallucinations in court. At some point I took ChatGPTs word for it on the address to mail the court notice to. That address was a hallucination and resulted in glowforge not being served. I caught it early enough and was able to try again. The second attempt was successful. But yeah ChatGPT is so so bad at getting facts correct.

Glowforge never showed up and never responded to any communications. The judge briefly reviewed what I had and awarded me $3000. Its a default judgement. I would have liked the vindication of winning an actual argument but I guess I'll take what I can get. I don't know if I would have followed through on it without ChatGPT available to me as a tool to help keep me on track and to glaze me relentlessly.

In conclusion, fuck Glowforge, and thanks ChatGPT.
