Batman Begins (2005) TRAILER REVIEW: Christian Bale, Katie Holme, Cillian Murphy, Michael Cane, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman

Before the trailer even begins, the Warner Bros. logo explodes into an army of bats flying over YOU, the POV camera. The trailer begins with the voice of Ra’s al Ghul (Liam Neeson), “Tell us, Mr. Wayne.”

It cuts to Bruce Wayne as a kid falling into a dark well.

“What do you fear?”

Young Bruce Wayne (Gus Lewis) stared at the dark abyss. But then, BATS, thousands of BATS flew over his face. It cuts to the adult Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) waking up in the morning. It’s all a nightmare. Bruce Wayne has a lot of trauma. He had trauma from falling into a well, trauma from bats, and trauma from the murder of his parents.

“How do you know my name?” Bruce asked Ra’s al Ghul. Apparently, he’s not in his home. He woke up in an underground bunker of sorts.

“The world is too small for someone like Bruce Wayne to disappear,” Ra’s al Ghul said.

It cuts to Bruce Wayne walking along a snowy mountain.

It cuts to young Bruce Wayne with tears in his eyes. He’s on the floor in the alley, right beside his murdered parents.

“Your parent’s death was not your fault,” Ra’s al Ghul said.

It cuts to a temple in the middle of a snowy mountain.

“My parents deserve justice,” Bruce Wayne said. “I cannot let that pass.”

It cuts to Bruce Wayne and Ra’s al Ghul sword sparring in the middle of the snow. Bruce Wayne is shirtless. This is training. It cuts to Bruce trying to balance on some sticks while Ra’s al Ghul’s men try to poke him with swords and sticks. He also did a one-handed push-up on the narrow sticks.

“If you make yourself more than just a man,” Ra’s al Ghul said, “then you become something else entirely.”

“Which is?” Bruce asked.

“A legend of the story,” Ra’s said.

It cuts to Bruce running across the cold mountains as the ice melts. It cuts to him walking into a plane. The ice scenes in the storyline are set in Bhutan, Tibet. But the movie is filmed at the Svínafellsjökull glacier in Iceland.

Alfred (Michael Caine) stepped out of the plane and smiled, “Master Wayne!”

In the plane during the flight back to America, “Are you coming back for long, Sir?” Alfred asked.

“As long as it takes,” Bruce said, “to show the people of Gotham that their city does not belong to the criminals and the corrupt.”

As you know, the story is set in the fictional Gotham City, but the filming was in Chicago.

It cuts to a fancy party. A grey sports car passed by. You see men in suits and women in dresses. You see Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) in a black glitter dress, “Bruce?”

“Rachel?” Bruce Wayne responded. He wore a suit, but his hair was still artfully disheveled. This scene is like when you met your ex at a mall.

“You were gone a long time,” Rachel said.

“Yeah,” Bruce nodded.

“Things are wore than ever down here,” Rachel said. “What chance does people have when good people do nothing.”

It cuts back to the Wayne Enterprise lab. Lucious Fox pulled out a suit, it’s a black Kevlar one. “Nomex survival suit for advanced infantry,” Fox said. “Kevlar utility harness. Gas-powered, magnetic, grapple gun.” Fox cocked the grappling gun.

But Bruce looked to his side, “What’s that?”

Bruce saw a large, military bridging vehicle with cream-white and brown camouflage colors.

“The Tumbler?” Fox said. “Ooooh, you wouldn’t be interested in that.”

It cuts to The Tumbler, which is now all black as it explodes out of a cave. It became the Batmobile.

It cuts to flashbacks of Bruce as a kid as thousands of bats flew over his face.

It cuts to Bruce opening his closet. And then you finally see it, the Batman Suit.

You hear Rachel’s voiceover, “I’ve spent a lot of time being scared for you. And I heard your back. But the man I loved, the man who vanished, never came back.” Rachel caressed Bruce’s cheek.

It’s sad, but Bruce Wayne changed a lot over the years he disappeared. Maybe it’s for the best. Rachel is right, the man she loved never came back. Maybe she was attracted to the scared, spoiled brat, playboy billionaire, not the Bruce Wayne who had ice ninja training.

Back in the lab, Bruce threw a shuriken bat that stabbed the wall.

It cuts to nighttime on top of a skyscraper. You see the now iconic shot of Batman, brooding over the Gotham City skyline.

It cuts to inside a warehouse, “He’s here,” Scarecrow said.

“Who?” one of his henchmen asked.

A smiling Scarecrow, looking up, said, “The Batman.”

It cuts to THOUSANDS of BATS coming down from a hotel lobby. And then, Batman came down in the middle of the bat army.

It cuts to a police car crashing and flipping through the streets.

It cuts to Rachel hugging a kid who is in fear.

“Gotham must be destroyed,” said another Ra’s al Ghul (Ken Watanabe).

You also see the true form of Scarecrow, wearing that brown, grimy, dilapidated bag.

It cuts to Batman flying through the streets.

It cuts to Bruce Wayne in a suit at a party, “Gotham isn’t beyond saving.”

EVIL

It cuts to Batman saving Rachel, who is unconscious in a warehouse.

It cuts to a burning building. Batman saved some people just in the nick of time, right before the flaming debris crashed.

FEARS THE KNIGHT

It cuts to Batman shooting the grappling gun up to a building.

“Rachel!” Batman shouted.

It cuts to Scarecrow on a horse, who was breathing fire.

It cuts to Batman flying through the side of buildings or alleyways.

It cuts to Bruce Wayne at a fancy dinner. “A guy who dresses up as a bat,” he smirked and pointed to his head, “clearly has issues.”
