Absolute Wonder Woman Volume One Review (No Spoilers)

Absolute Wonder Woman Volume One Front Cover

Diana Prince, better known as Wonder Woman, and in this new series by DC Comics, she’s the princess of… hell?

Without the island paradise, without the sisterhood that shaped her, without a mission of peace…she’s still the Absolute Amazon!

Spiraling out of the catastrophic events of Absolute Power, a new side of the DC Universe is born — the Absolute Universe!

In a different, darker world, Diana of Themyscira was not raised in paradise, but instead was exiled to the underworld as a baby and raised by an enemy. Darkness and exile did not destroy her; instead, they made her all the stronger — honed into an even greater weapon by tragedy, danger, and magic. Long denied her Amazonian heritage, Diana has finally reached the time for her to rejoin the surface world. Armed with new weapons forged in Hell, and a mission that looks a bit more like justice than peace, Diana will not be stopped on her quest to save the world and discover her place in it, even if that means carving it herself!” (Blurb from the back of the book.)

Author: Kelly Thompson.

Illustrator: Hayden Sherman.

Status: Ongoing.

Publisher: DC Comics.

Artwork: The artwork is very bold, painterly, and emotionally charged. It is different than what I expected or am used to, but it matches the tone and feelings that the story conveys. The color palette features visceral colors such as red, gold, and blue, which reflect Wonder Woman’s classic attire that she’s known for.

In-book artwork

Narrative: The story is easy to follow and adds some interesting twists to her usual origin story. She gains new powers, new equipment, and meets familiar and unfamiliar faces that fans of classic Wonder Woman may recognize. She also faces infamous mythological beasts and even has to confront the gods themselves at a certain point as she establishes herself as Absolute Wonder Woman, the last Amazon.

Overall Rating: Overall, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It has good writing, unique artwork, and is an entertaining read.
