Frankenstein Review. When Victor says,

When Victor says,

“You are an obscenity.” The creature replies, “You call me an obscenity, but to me, I just am.”

Victor, as a man, could never love an obscenity,

a visual beast,

a monstrous creature,

who would not submit.

As when a woman loses a man’s desire,

his appeal for her,

whether through beauty,

age,

or intelligence,

she becomes an obscenity

to them.

But to the woman,

who continues to exist

despite her worth

removed from him,

she just,

is.

Women are trained

to see

beyond appearances,

whereas men are not.

In the monsters gaze she sees

her shattered experience of womanhood.

Misunderstood.

a creature of

approval and appearance

concealing

“rage and flaws and love.”

She understands the cruelty

of civilized men,

and finds no rest

in its world.

Victor, once realizing

the full weight

of his own monstrosity

and filled with grief

for a life that cannot

be undone,

can no longer

stay alive

in a world that

has no place

for such a man.
