Review “More Than Santa Baby” dives into the prolific work and life of Phillip Springer

Filmmaker Tamar Springer begins her documentary short film, More than Santa Baby, with a musing that is familiar to many creatives. “What else did he write?” was a question she often got when pointing out that her father wrote the song “Santa Baby.” We soon see that Tamar’s distress at the question mirrored her father’s, Phillip Springer, and for good reason.

The accomplished and prolific pianist, composer, and artist was known for hundreds of hits over the years, sung by a who’s who of international voices. However, the fame of “Santa Baby” eluded him.

Springer’s life is laid bare in this film narrated by himself and his daughter, Tamar. He was an early piano sensation who had a love for all things musical. He joined bands, composed songs, and immersed himself in music at the young age of 17. In his 20s, Springer joined and wrote prolifically for the group of songwriters known as the Tin Pan Alley crowd at the Brill Building in New York City. It was during this time that the young songwriter got an assignment to write a song for Eartha Kitt. He created the melody, and his partner wrote the lyrics for the song that would become his best-known work around the world.

However, over the years, Springer would also write for some of the greatest singers known to our kind. Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Judy Garland, and so many more. Somehow, these accomplishments, along with the songs and shows he wrote for film, TV, and Broadway, would be overshadowed by the “Santa Baby” mega fame.

More Than Santa Baby has a message for artists chasing their “hit” while simultaneously creating the music that defines multiple generations. Take stock and be proud of your accomplishments. And, it’s never too late to win international acclaim. The documentary recounts how Springer achieved this at the age of 94.
