My Book Review of THE LADY WITH A BEARD by Alobwed’Epie

This book was recently incorporated into the curriculum of secondary schools in Cameroon. It was set in the Kupe-Muanenguba division (predominantly occupied by the Bakossi tribe), in the South West Region of Cameroon.

As a lady with a unilateral mustache myself,🌝 I picked this book looking for a literal lady with a beard, mustache, anything.😅 But I found none.

This is the story of Emade, a widow and mother of Ntube, who befalls the challenges from the men and women of Atieg village & beyond.
She was always ready to estrange herself from her oppressors and grow in strength in her solitude. Gaining the title: ‘the lady with a beard.’

Emade challenged patriarchal authority by digging graves, publicly chanting songs and playing drums reserved for men.
All contrary to the norms and the due counseling from her sister, Ahone. Thus, costing Ntube, her social interaction with her peers.

After conquering many of her predicaments, Emade fell short of her strength, when an ill-feeling crowded her mind and sleep. Thus, forced to send her daughter, Ntube, away to a missionary, for some relief. Yet to no avail.
