Before You Start a Podcast, 4 Things You Need to Know

Are you wanting to start a podcast? Podcasting is the best option for online businesses that are trying to grow, but there are a few things you need to know before you get started.

4 Things You Need to Know Before You Start a Podcast

Here are the 4 things you need to have if you want to start and grow your podcast.

1. To Start a Podcast, Know Your Niche

Before you start a podcast you need to know who you are serving and what your niche is.

What is your podcast going to be about? And who are you going to speak to?

I like to create this visual of a pocket. Imagine this pocket is the topic you want to talk about and stay in that pocket. For example, health is too broad. That’s not a pocket, but what is a pocket of that category? Maybe the pocket is meal planning for busy moms.

I call this a micro-micro-niche. If you want more clarity and help around your micro-micro niche, check out my Profitable Podcast Bootcamp.

2. Three Episodes Recorded

Inside my course Podcast to Profit, I have my students record three episodes.

The first episode is more about your story. You can include things like who you are and what you are providing. The point of having two more episodes, is that we aren’t leaving them with just that one story. We want to give them something to binge.

These episodes don’t have to be long or drawn out, but we want to answer the things they want to know or are struggling with. Make it a micro bite-size takeaway.

3. You Need Equipment

You are going to need the equipment to record your podcast. This isn’t a lot of equipment either.

You need a microphone. In all actuality, the new iphones have great microphones and you can start with that. I usually recommend the Blue Yeti mic because it’s high quality and affordable. I used my Blue Yeti mic for 5 years with podcasting, and just recently upgraded.

4. You Are Going to Have to Use Software

As you are recording your micro-micro-niche episodes on your microphone, you are going to need software to host it (or have somewhere for it to go).

I personally use Audacity to record my episodes and love it. You can also use Zoom if you are doing a podcast interview or incorporating video. Riverside is another great option, but when you are getting started Audacity and Zoom are free and do a great job.

I use Podbean as my podcast host.

Bonus Tip If You Want to Start a Podcast

Get professional podcast art done. The cover of your podcast is extremely important.

One of the worst mistakes I see people make is making their own podcast art, and it just doesn’t look professional. It doesn’t have all the points that make it look great like:

  • Clear podcast title that’s SEO-rich
  • A tagline that tells them what the podcast is about
  • A professional photo of you

Your podcast cover looking professional is going to be the difference in someone clicking your podcast over someone else’s podcast.
