New Yorkers who have been there since the 90s or longer: trying to solve a mystery.

EDIT: IT WAS CHANNEL VIDEO! Not Amsterdam Video. Thank you SOO much to /u/Pleasant-Regular6169. You have freed the worms from my brain and I am forever in your debt.

I lived in NYC for about a decade. (Hoping to move back.) Life brought me to the Southern US. I’m in my 30s now.

So today, I go to the antique store. I buy 3 VHS tapes. One of them was Disney’s
“Fun and Fancy Free”. I remarked on this to my father. This unearthed a memory.

“Hey dad, what was that video store we went to all the time when we lived in Manhattan?”
“Blockbuster?”
“No, not Blockbuster. and not Hollywood Video. it was very small. I remember it was always dark inside.”

Do you see the problem? I didn’t.

Eventually, we put it together that it’s “Amsterdam Video”. The trouble is, everything I can find on it says it was just a straight-up smut shop. But I remember getting “Fun and Fancy Free” there…

Is this possible? Did they have a “normal” section? Did my dad just take me on a side quest to a porn shop every week? Or is one of us misremembering?

This woulda been between 1998-2000, most likely. Upper West Side.
