Have there been any movies that combine a lot of text, near the level of a novel, say, with the movie?

I'm always struck by just how much a movie can't tell you, while a novel gives you so much information as you go that it's really a quantum level beyond movies, despite the fact that "a picture is worth a thousand words". No, it's not. A thousand words do more than a picture can. But combining the two would be very hard, I'm sure.
