what exactly was it with marlon brando that made him such a great actor

i did my this years rewatch of the godfather and started going down the rabbithole of marlon brando. i watched streetcar named desire and apocalypse now and it is so obvious that he has a great performance every single time and it looks so effortless but i cant figure out what is it exactly, what does he do and other actors dont do that makes him stand out this much. i read about how he was the first real method actor but this phrase is confusing for me to understand it totally, what does it really mean to be a method actor? sorry this is an extra question, i just want to discuss whatever brandos novelty was in the movies and acting world, thanks
