What is the fundamental difference between a movie director, and an AI content creator?
For a movie director, he doesn't do any of the acting, has probably no clues how the chemistry of explosives or the manufacturing process of various costumes and sets. He has a general understanding of what elements come together to express what he has in mind. If he doesn't see what he likes, he tells the actors or the equipment team to do it again and again until he sees something he likes.
For an (let's say decent right now) AI content creator, he probably don't have hardcore skills in graphic processing, nor hardcore skills in animation and sound effects. He keeps editing his prompts, generating bunch of results until he sees the stuff he like, then maybe mash them together, to create whether a picture or a video clip that he liked.
Personally, I have been doing digital drawing and video creation for more than 10 years. Ai tools have been a super time saver when it comes to changing the lightning of a background, changing the pose of a character while keeping the outfit, etc. Before AI, I would have to use 3d model software for human postures, super positioning a real life object onto my characters for reference when drawing. At what point does these tools become AI? At what point does a creation become unworthy?
For me, the value of art isn't about how much time it took to create, its about the result. If it's beautiful, stimulates positive emotions, I think it's art. A horrible piece of essay is still horrible even if you spent 10 years writing it. Does a student writing a nice essay with the help of libraries and teachers worth less salary then one who had access to these resources but refused to use them?
Of course there are ai slop, and people who use ai for bad purposes like making click bait videos/pictures. But these bad people are just like the dark side in star wars, they have existed forever, just in different forms. A similar thing could be said about science. With advancement in science, bad guys have found more ways to steal things, kill people. It wouldn't make sense to stop teaching things in school, so everyone stay can primitive. No nuclear war when we don't even have electricity, right?
As a digital painter myself, I still struggle to come to terms calling beautiful ai generated stuff art. But I just can't find anything concrete enough to say otherwise!
Downvote is fine, but please stay civilized and calm please. I'm just a dull dude who has too much time during commute.
