Watching this evening I noticed something that I've been unable to find via any google search.
In the early scenes of the movie, we see Russell and Lena (Bale and Saldana, respectively) in bed together before Russell has to leave to go to work.
Near the climax/ending of the film, as Russell is setting his trap for Harlan (Woody Harrelson) in motion, at 1:34:00, we see what Wesley (Forest Whitaker), Lena, and Dan (Tom Bower) are doing, and Lena is laying by herself in a bed with the same exact sheets as earlier in the movie. Nearly an hour and a half has gone by since those sheets got about 45 seconds of screen-time, but they are pretty distinctive. She is certainly back in Russell's bed, and given the contemporaneity of the cuts to the other characters, it would be nonsensical to be a flashback.
Flaws remain with the ending, but I think the idea that Russell and Lena are back together, at least to some degree, and Russell is once again jeopardizing his relationship with Lena with potential jail-time to avenge his brother does improve the ending somewhat. Russell's brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) and Rodney's debt is the reason Russell was out at the bar the night he hit and killed someone, sending him to prison and ruining his life and relationship with Lena. Rodney is once again the motivator for Russell to risk arrest. Finally, this also leaves a lot of questions as to why Wesley would protect Russell by not turning him in after witnessing him kill Harlon.
Any thoughts or am I making too much of this? Has anyone noticed this before?
