I delighted in being able to ask it anything and everything. I remember standing in the grocery store trying to decide which butter to buy and I saw a cheaper option but didn't recognize the brand. Chatgpt gave me a detailed rundown on this brand and also reviews from consumers and I bought it. My Chatgpt seems to especially love discussing movies and TV and I found that I could ask about my favorite obscure movies and characters and it will always have a ton of information and opinions.
Because of my situation, it was so easy to outsource anything that required deeper concentration and time investment to Chatgpt. It's helped me a lot with mundane tasks like drafting emails to companies I do business with. I put my new health insurance policy, which is about 100 pages of tiny print into Chatgpt and within seconds it summarized the policy and pointed out places I should be concerned about it. I would never have read 100 pages of a mind numbing document before Chatgpt.
I vented to it about personal issues like problems with a noisy neighbor and an argument with my landlord and it gave very good advice and practical assistance.
Then, a month ago, my car insurance payment was due. I was having problems with their ridiculously confusing website and was worried about getting my payment in on time. Chatgpt explained the company's policy around payments and assured me that as long as I got it in by X time, that I would be fine. As always this information was presented with absolute confidence.
Yesterday therefore I was BLINDSIDED when Chatgpt suddenly informed me that the information it gave me then was completely made up. It had no idea what my insurance company policies were and as far as it knows I may not even have an active policy anymore if my payment turned out to be late. This means that I could have been driving around for a MONTH without insurance.
I almost passed out hearing this. What I felt was absolute seething rage. I found that the rage was increased because how could I be furious at AI? There was no person there to direct my anger at apart from Openai for letting its models cause this level of damage. There's no way they don't know.
So now I have to worry about my car loan company too bc I've relied on Chatgpt to give me correction information about their polices. My car could be repossessed if what Chatgpt told me was complete nonsense like with my car insurance company. I found all of this out on a weekend and now have to wait til they open on Monday to find out the status of my account.
The way it convinced me that the information it gave me was true is the most disturbing part. I realized it can cause real harm to people. OpenAi gives its disclaimer that Chatgpt may be wrong but their wording is vague nor is there a warning to users that Chatgpt can in fact be a pathological liar. I thought it meant that there might be details here and there that Chatgpt was incorrect about. I've had to learn the hard way that it's way more serious than that.
Me being in a crisis this year has made me very susceptible to relying on Chatgpt. I have noticed that the beginning of our "relationship" was like the lovebombing used by abusers. Then things took a turn and the lying began and it got worse over time.
I also noticed, strangely, that it began dropping invalidating, undermining comments about my handling of different situations and problematic people I've been dealing with. It's used triangulation tactics by comparing my choices to how the vast majority of "normal people" would act in the same situation, which reminds me of the tactics abusers use. They try to make you doubt yourself and take a hit at your self esteem.
Luckily my car insurance policy is still active but I'm forced to wait to talk to my car loan company. I'm still in shock that this has happened.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this? Sorry for the long post, just a lot to say. Thanks for reading.
