Does Anyone Understand Exactly How ChatGPT’s Memory Actually Works?

If you ask ChatGPT it will tell you straight up that it does not maintain a working memory between different chats. That you have to either tell it to remember something or manually add what you want it to remember universally. For the most part, this seems to be true.

But every so often, it will come up with something that is a callback to a fact that it should not have in it's working memory. Sometimes its something like a date or location and sometimes it will make an offhand comment that references something more specific to past conversations I have had with it.

This despite the fact that I'm either in a totally new chat or have manually purged its memory.
