Why do FPS players not care about Team Deathmatch anymore?

I know I'm an old aging irrelevant has been wannabe gamer who should just go drown in a lake instead of giving his useless opinion on things he doesn't understand but I still rate when the original Modern Warfare 2 came out in 2009 playing on Xbox 360 as the greatest multiplayer era I ever had. The sheer hype and just number of people playing was massive.

It feels like Team Deathmatch just isn't popular anymore. But isn't it the closest thing to a real battle? Two teams/factions fighting to the death? I always thought adding additional objectives gameified it too much and left people with bad aim a chance. In a real battle its all about your combat skills, that's it.
