I got recommended The Good Place recently and whereas it's not a bad show, it has this specific dialogue coming from Eleanor (Kristen Bell's character) and other characters and it's just obnoxious to listen to sometimes.
Ive seen this type of dialogue this past decade growing and growing like a descending snowball. Shows like Succession or the movie Mountainhead where they all try to sound sarcastic, smart, funny, self deprecating ano aware in fast paced monotonous speech etc. etc. Its honestly quite annoying to me. I can't help but thinking
"oh cmon nobody talks like that". Whedon's screenwriting is a notorious example of this, its all over the entire MCU and it's spilling out to DC. Characters seem like they cant cope with their emotions unless they drop sarcastic jokes, self deprecating remarks, and condescending lines that makes me roll me eyes into my skull… "oh here we go with that witty quippy dialogue again". Some people seem to love it but I just can't stand it anymore. Almost everyone in today's Hollywood movies sound like that now, as if they were taking notes from Whedon because it worked for him. Cmon guys, you're not trying to win a Twitter argument with a gen z person, 'cause thats how it sounds like. It might work for certain characters from time to time but not EVERY TIME.
Is this your cup of tea for dialogue?.
