There are different game genres built around a specific type of player interaction — for example, FPS games. The core mechanics there are well-known and established, so developers usually focus on expanding the world, lore, or the variety of weapons.
But some games manage to discover a truly great gameplay mechanic — one so strong that the entire game is built around it. Often, the world itself isn’t deeply developed, yet that single unique mechanic is enough to make the game stand out and feel complete.
For me, such games are:
- Haven (air sliding)
- The Pathless (target shot improvement)
What games do you think have a similarly unique and well-crafted core mechanic?
