Stick drift, is it mostly the user?

I’ve been gaming for 30 years, and apart form the N64s analogue stick that just goes floppy over time, I have never ever experienced stick drift on any console.

This includes the following with analogue sticks:
PSX, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Switch, Switch 2, GameCube, Steam deck, Dreamcast.

And then you speak to others that have experienced it multiple times in a very short timespan (on switch or PS5).

Based on what I’ve found, I’m assuming excessive use of them (pushing them constantly with way too much force all the time) will eventually lead to speeding up drift.

I appreciate there’s a difference in quality of sticks that will lessen or even eliminate this, but… Can someone clarify if I’ve just been lucky or whether others are just abusing their controllers and then blaming it on console manufacturers?
