That’s a great idea! But…what happens next…?

I was thinking about this the other night; those films that have a great premise, but it’s as if the writers fall at the first post, and the succeeding story never really ‘gels’ into anything more substantial.

Three films come to mind; ‘Vivarium’, ‘Awake’ and ‘The Substance.’ They all have a great jumping-off point but, beyond that, it’s as if the writers never thought where to take them, resulting in films that (at best) seem to be treading water, narratively-speaking, and just hanging on until the end credits.
