Why do some great directors not get noticed?

A guy like Chris Columbus who directed home alone and Harry Potter. Us film buffs might know him and his work but the average person wouldn’t.
They know Tarantino, Spielberg, maybe James Cameron, but how many people will go see film cuz David Yates directed it?

Even people who think of Back to the Future probably think more Spielberg and not Robert Zemekis.

What makes one director‘s name bigger than the movie compared to other directors who sorta stay in the background compared to the film (think fast and furious compared to Justin lin)
