Dude, That Story Wouldn’t Work

The face when you pitch a barebones story idea and someone responds, "That wouldn't work because X." X being an issue any halfway decent screenwriter could neutralize.

Within reason, a good screenwriter can make almost any idea work.

A related question: How many "low-concept" movies have you seen that were EXCELLENT? Movies with no unique "hook." Movies that wouldn't pique your interest based on the synopsis alone.

I never had any burning desire to watch "My Dinner With Andre" or "The Best Years Of Our Lives" or "Rebecca." But all of these films turned out to be very strong, and I cursed myself for not watching them earlier. Sometimes the genius of a film is in the execution, not the concept. There's more than one way to skin a cat, as they say.
