Why do I have to hold the TV remote like a detonator when watching modern movies?

Is it just me, or has audio mixing gotten worse?

The dialogue is whispered. I turn it up to hear what they are saying. Then suddenly BOOM! An explosion or music swell happens and it wakes up the neighbors. I scramble to turn it down.

I shouldn't have to "ride the volume" just to watch a movie on a Friday night. I basically have to watch everything with subtitles on now, even in my native language.

Is this an artistic choice or just bad engineering for home TVs?
