│ When you select Auto or Pro, Gemini CLI will attempt to use
│ gemini-3-pro-preview first, before falling back to gemini-2.5-pro.

│ 1. Auto
│ Let the system choose the best model for your task.
│
│ 2. Pro (gemini-3-pro-preview, gemini-2.5-pro)
│ For complex tasks requiring deep reasoning and creativity.

│ 3. Flash (gemini-2.5-flash)
│ Balance of speed and reasoning.
│
│ 4. Flash-Lite (gemini-2.5-flash-lite)
│ For simple tasks that need to be done quickly.
The problem?
Choosing Auto or Pro may silently drop you back to 2.5-pro, which (in my experience) is nowhere near Codex or Claude for coding or deep reasoning tasks.
So… is Google trying to quietly sunset the CLI to push people toward Antigravity? Because I need a solid local/terminal workflow, not a web UI.
Anyone else seeing this or feeling the same?
When you open the Gemini CLI now, you get this:
│ Select Model
│
│ Gemini 3 is now enabled.
│ To disable Gemini 3, disable "Preview features" in /settings.

│
│ When you select Auto or Pro, Gemini CLI will attempt to use

│ 3. Flash (gemini-2.5-flash)
│ Balance of speed and reasoning.
│
│ 4. Flash-Lite (gemini-2.5-flash-lite)

The issue: Choosing Auto or Pro may silently drop you back to 2.5-pro, which (at least right now) just isn’t on par with Codex or Claude for coding or heavy reasoning.
So… is the CLI being quietly sidelined to push people toward Antigravity?
I rely on CLI tools for my workflow, so this fallback behavior feels like a step backward.
Anyone else running into this or have more insight?
