When was the golden era of AAA games?

Seems like nowadays AAA games are pumped out without passion and hold profits as the main concern. When were good triple A games made with passion, concern for player experience, and somewhat optimized so that the average gamer can enjoy them without spending a fortune on a god pc? I feel like indie games are taking the spotlight away from the $70 mainstream junk from companies that care less and less about consumer experience.
