First-time watcher: The Harry Potter movies suck

I am very late to this game. I, an adult, am watching the Harry Potter series for the first time. Why are they so… bad? I am watching them with my boyfriend – who like most people, grew up loving Harry Potter and its movies.

Having not read the books or been a fan in childhood, these are my unbiased, raw, standalone thoughts of the movies themselves:

  • Where is the gravitas of it all? I love fantastical movies, adventure, magic, etc… but the Harry Potter movies don’t give GRAND. It’s very unsatisfying. It doesn’t quench my thirst for the mystical supernatural. I feel like between the sets, directoral choices, and camera shots, it could’ve been more magical, emotional, and theatrical.
  • There is a lack of character emphasis. I’m on the 5th movie, and I still don’t understand who Hermonie IS. She is one of the main characters, but I don’t know her background, story, or home life. I feel like Sirius Black and his family are supposed to be critical to the storyline? I’m confused if he is or not. The characters don’t hold weight. The way they are shallowly depicted in the movies, hinder the ability to have a deeper connection or love for them.
  • The movies feel rushed. The plot jumps from one scene to the next without the cinematic elements that help a movie flow cohesively. By the end of the movie, I can see the story they were trying to tell, but the poor film composition doesn’t execute it well.
  • The movies look cheap. Isn’t this a successful franchise? Why do the movies feel low budgeted? It might be the overuse of CGI? When I watch a movie, I want to be immersed in that universe. More often than not, the illusion is uncovered.

I am disappointed. You guys hyped up the Harry Potter movies all my life. I was expecting so much more. Now, I am left wanting to read the books, so I can TRULY experience the world of Harry Potter.
