The trailer begins with a shot of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial at night. You hear the voiceover of Col. Nathan Jessep (Jack Nicholson), “You ever served at an infantry unit, Son?”
“No, Sir,” said Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise).
“Ever served in a forward area?” Col. Jessep asked.
“No, Sir,” Lt. Kaffee responded.
You see a shot of the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, commonly known as the Iwo Jima Memorial.
“Ever put your life in another man’s hands, and ask him to put his life in yours?,” Col. Jessep asked.
“No, Sir,” Lt. Kaffee responded.
“We follow orders, Son,” Col. Jessep declared. “We follow orders or people die. It’s that simple.”
It is revealed that the two men are in a courtroom. Col. Jessep is on the stand while Lt. Kaffee is standing up, cross-examining the Colonel.
“Are we clear?” Col. Jessep authoritatively asked.
“Yes, Sir,” Lt. Kaffee responded.
“Are we clear?,” Col. Jessep shouted.
Lt. Kaffee smirked and said, “Crystal.”
You hear the voice of Judge Randolph (J.A. Preston), “All those having business with this general court martial, stand forward and you shall be heard.”
Capt. Jack Ross (Kevin Bacon) stood up, “The facts of the case are these. On midnight of September 6th,….”
It cuts to the two men accused, Pfc. Downey (James Marshall) and Lance Cpl. Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison)
“…the accused entered the barracks room of their platoon-mate, they woke him up, tied his arms and legs with tape, and forced a rag within his throat. A few minutes later, a chemical reaction caused his lungs to begin bleeding. He drowned in his own blood and was pronounced dead at 37 minutes passed midnight.”
It cuts to an office. Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore) asked 2nd Lt. Jonathan Kendrick (Keifer Sutherland). “Do you think Santiago was murdered?” she asked.
“Private Santiago is dead, and that is a tragedy,” Lt. Kendrick said. “But he is dead because he had no code. He is dead because he had no honor. And God was watching.”
That’s pretty sus. According to the facts narrated by Capt. Jack Ross and the two men entered Santiago’s barracks. They tied his arms and legs and forced a rag through his throat. His lungs bled, and he drowned from his own blood within 37 minutes. That’s pretty horrible. That doesn’t sound like hazing or any kind of punishment. It sounds like murder. They even had flashbacks of what happened. They forced a rag over his throat and taped his mouth. However, for Lt. Kendrick, Santiago died because he had ‘No honor. No code. And God was watching.’ It’s like they’re justifying the murder.
It cuts to the hallways of a military base. “I knocked in all down to involuntary man slaughter,” Capt. Jack Ross told Lt. Kaffee and Lt. Cdr. Galloway.
“No deal,” Lt. Cdr. Galloway said, “We’re going to court.”
“No, you’re not,” Capt. Ross said.
“Why not?” Lt. Cdr. Galloway asked.
“Because you’ll loose,” Capt. Ross said.
It cuts to outdoors. Col. Jessep smirked, “You wanna investigate me? Roll the dice and take your chances.”
Lt. Kaffee, Lt. Cdr. Galloway, and Lt. Weinberg (Kevin Pollak) listened to him intently.
“I eat breakfast 300 yards from 4,000 Cubans who are trained to kill me. So don’t think for one second you can come down here, flash your badge, and make me nervous.” He then smoked his cigar.
Col. Jessep is ruthless and overconfident. And you can’t blame him. He had been doing this for decades. I haven’t met a 60-year-old Colonel recently. You can imagine how arrogant and overconfident they could be.
Back in the courtroom. “Your men follow orders or people die,” Lt. Kaffee told the Colonel.
“You want answers?” Col. Jessep asked.
“I think I’m entitled,” Lt. Kaffee raised his voice.
“You want answers?” Col. Jessep raised his voice back.
“I want the truth!” Lt. Kaffee shouted.
“You can’t handle the truth!” Col. Jessep responded.
Gosh, what an iconic line.
“Son,” Col. Jessep continued, “we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it?….”
“…You?”
It cuts to another outdoor area. “If this case is handled in the same fast-food, slick ass, Persian bizarre manner of which you seem to handle everything else, then something is gonna get missed,” Lt. Cdr. Galloway raised her voice to Lt. Kaffee.
You now get a cheesy, intense trailer voice. “In the heart of our nation’s capital…”
You see military men in uniform doing a drill.
“…in a court house in the United States Government..”
You see Lt. Kaffee walk into the middle of the courtroom.
You see Col. Jessep enter as men in uniform closed the courtroom door behind him.
“One man will stop at nothing to keep his honor…”
It cuts to Lt. Kaffee seemingly spaced out in the courtroom.
“…and one will stop at nothing to find the truth.”
